Multiboot Question

If you are dual bootin' because it has a different DE (KDE,GNOME) then consider installing multiple DEs:

like:
Code:
sudo apt install xfce4
Code:
sudo apt install cinnamon-desktop-environment

I am relatively new to the world of dual booting, I was advised against installing multiple different DE on the same installations.

I mean going in to the existing /boot/efi and designating it as the /boot/efi for the new installation (now I’m holding my breath until I’m certain that’s what I was supposed to do)

You DO realise the medical consequences of doing that?

(Bloke works in a frickin' hospital)

Yeah, that looks fine. More importantly is it working fine?

A question for multi-booters. Does any one know if Manjaro and OpenSuse play nice together or should I prepare for..... KERNEL PANIC!!!

Morning, Jeffrey :)

Interestingly enough, I am only recently able to answer that question.

Periodically over the last 4 and a half years I have tried to install openSUSE and failed, for one reason or another. A couple of months ago, I tried again, and succeeded (and so, of course straight away installed Timeshift and took a snap :D).

You will recall my Post here

https://www.linux.org/threads/manja...or-arch-based-distros.19795/page-2#post-59075

... where I described a file custom.cfg you could add to your Grub menu, which allows Manjaro to boot without meltdown into Kernel Panic.

That step does not need to be performed in the case of openSUSE.

openSUSE is the first Distro I have found, which, when in Primary Partition spot (ie top of the Grub Leaderboard) accommodates launching Manjaro and other Arch-based Distros.

Hope that is good news for you :p

Cheers

Wizard

Edited - added BTW

BTW - that is with openSUSE 'Tumbleweed', I have not tried Leap yet.

OpenSuse uses RPM correct?

Yes and No.

SUSE has a history that goes back nearly as far as Redhat (RPM is Redhat Package Management), and right from the start, they started putting their own "stamp" on things.

Where RPM uses/used YUM (Yellowdog Update Modifier, now deprecated), and DNF (Dandified YUM), openSUSE uses zypper to install, update and upgrade.

A guide to bookmark is the Pacman/Rosetta, brought to us by our friends at Arch

... which will help you to implement a number of the common commands.

Which DE do you use for OpenSuse?

The standard is KDE - I do not know of an alternative, although I could be mistaken (happens every 100 years or so :D). I would be surprised if there was not a spin somewhere, with alternatives DEs. Gecko which is based on openSUSE has MATE and Budgie, amongst others. I have the MATE as well.

Be aware, too that openSUSE is one of very few Linux Distros that does not provide for a Live "try before you buy" scenario. It is install or nothing. I can provide articles if you want a read, or else search under eg

openSUSE no Live option

And I will NEVER live that down I see :D:D

I might forget it in a century or so, my memory is not what it was the Millennium before last

I am going to include how to install TS in openSUSE in my Timeshift article shortly, or sing out if you need help.

Cheers

Wiz
BTW my experience is limited to the Rolling Release, Tumbleweed, have not used Leap yet.

Thank you! I completely forgot about this link! I came across this a while back but since I was playing with Arch derivatives I forgot to bookmark it.

Thanks for the warning! I did not know that. I sold my problematic NVIDIA containing laptop a few weeks ago and replaced it with a Lenovo X! carbon, 8th gen i5 and I am in the process of setting things up. I am going to drop a 1 TB SSD in it soon so this is the time to experiment. Currently I am running Manjaro Cinnamon and Manjaro KDE. With 1 TB of real estate I'd like to populate with a bit more variety.
