I ordered a 1TB SSD for gaming. But I'll have to reinstall my OS(I use Windows for gaming) Then a thought came to mind. Since I'll have to reinstall my OS why not put Arch on it? Now that gaming on Linux is better than ever, and I can mod skyrim on it. Should I finally make the switch now that I have the chance?

Hello GardenData61371,

How experienced are you with Linux.

My reason for asking is Arch Linux is not novice / newbie friendly and not an OOTB install update and run Linux Distro.
I've tested it on my old laptop.

I've tested it on my old laptop.
I've been using Linux for 5 years and Arch kicked my butt when I tried to install it.

You obviously are familiar with source code and how to compile and build packages.

It appears you're an experienced Linux user and will be an asset to Linux.org forums.

Why not both? Many dual boot or use virtual installs (qemu, vbox, xen). I use the latter. If you're committed to Steam, they have their own os.

I have not tried it myself, but SparkeyLinux GameOver edition might be a good try. It has lots of games included that can be played to see how it performs and it's based on Debian testing that is at least easier to use than Arch.

Just a 'heads-up!'.
A while back I installed a new 500G Samsung SSD in my laptop - 850 EVO I think it was.
I used the included Samsung Migration Wizard software to transfer the data from the old 'spinny' disk to the new SSD.
Everything went 'swimmingly' :) No problems, no issues, no errors. That is until I tried to create a 'Disk Image' using
the built-in Windows Disk Image program. BAM! Big problems! Well, actually it just didn't work.
After some research it appears that the Samsung Migration Wizard software made a list of files which it stored
in the 'System Reserved' partition. When I tried to make a disk image Windows complained that there was not enough
free space in that partition and would not complete. Bummer :(
Now I am left with the options of trying to enlarge that partition, delete some of the data in that partition, or try another imaging solution.
Two of which are fraught with danger! I like to have a disk image available so I don't have to spend 13 days, 2 first born, an arm and a leg
to re-install and update Windows 7.
Perhaps Clonezilla will work - that's my next attempt.

Arch has GUI installers now. One of them is named "Revenge/Zen installer" and the other is actually a distro - Arco. Personally I prefer the Zen installer cuz it installs only what you want and no bloatware.

@GardenData61371 , switch to Linux even if you don't have the chance. The sooner you get away from the Windows flock - the better.

I did give Revenge Installer a try and it does work well although you still have to compile and build packages and spend to much time to get everything / anything to work in Arch.

I'm an install and update and use as it comes OOTB and refuse to spend hours working on an OS.

If I wanted to spend hours working on an OS or OS software I'd be using Windows 10.

Arch
may be great for those who want to be gurus but to many other OOTB working Linux Distros to choose from.

I take of my hat to anyone who has the patience to continue with Windows 7. I gave up on it years ago after it first downloaded updates and then failed to install them. After that the internet didn't work anymore and I had some tech guy put Ubuntu based Zorin OS on a CD, which I used to install Ubuntu 14.04.

Today I have only Lubuntu on the same old PC, WIndows 7, Ubuntu 14.04 and lastly Debian 9 is all wiped of the same hard disk.

I actually find Ubuntu based distribution easier than Windows 7, it's just more difficult to get games to work on it, because I don't know how to use Wine or play on Linux. I am no gamer anyway and just play 0 A.D. now, that works well.
