I had Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia installed by a shop a while back, and when I fired it up, it just simmered. It took over a minute to type in my email address. The computer itself isn't slow, and my past experience with Linux on an old computer was more than satisfactory. So why is my computer dragging its heels?

Give us the specs for the computer, JA

G'day and welcome to linux.org :)

At Terminal

Code:
inxi -Fxz

will tell us all we need to know on it, for now, and preserves your privacy if you are using Wifi (filtered out).

...installed by a shop a while back...

I am pleasantly surprised you found a shop that installed Linux ;). Where do you live? We'll all move there and become neighbours.

Cheers

I'm away from my Linux computer, but as I recall, it has an AMD processor (2800) and at least a gig of ram, possibly two. I put it together some years back, but it's been in storage since the fall of 2015.

I live in Hawaii, so moving here is a good idea, at least in my opinion (especially if you live in the Midwest or the East coast). I found a shop in Kailua Kona (west coast of the Big Island of Hawaii). I thought all shops would do that, but what did I know.

I found a free PDF Linux book online that should answer a lot of my questions, although I doubt that I'll be much of a trouble shooter.

I believe the Linux distribution I had before was Mint 14 (not sure) but it was running with Windows XP, which might have made a difference. Very smooth, no problems (no password). What Linux do you recommend for my system?

On my low powered 10 year old desktops I run Antix 17.3.1 as it requires very minimal hardware resources.

Antix
for the most installs and runs OOTB and or has on my old desktops although have no idea how it will work on laptops as I'm not a laptop user.

Antix does come with a learning curve and an Antix user must be willing to search the Antix forum for solutions to problems which occur or may occur.

Antix is rock solid as it is based on Debian Stretch and comes in 32 bit and 64 bit.

An Antix user must learn to use the command terminal as that is how updates and new kernels are installed.

I use Antix base as it can be loaded on to a cd and then I install any needed software I want.

I wasn't REALLY prying, just joking (Aussie humour) .... but now that you mention Hawaii ...:rolleyes:

will show you more options, but friend Tom's (@poorguy )'s suggestion is a good starting point.

Sing out if you have questions.

I would like a Linux version that isn't geeky. Sorry, I meant TOO geeky. A pleasant desktop would be nice. About all I do is Internet, OpenOffice Writer and, in the future, Calc. Ah, maybe a music playlist. Anything to get way from Windows 10.
