Ok - the before mentioned friend came by the house.
It was not long before the talk turned computers, and how I was liking Linux. I said well I have not pulled the trigger on anything as yet since I can't figure out or decide which flavor to go with. After a few clicks and wiping Win10 from a laptop I had stopped using due to last Win10 update rendered the cooling fan unable to spool to high speed to keep it from over heating.
About 30 minutes or less Win10 was gone Linux 19.1 Cinnamon with Kernel 4.2 was running - I must say SCREAMING FAST.
This laptop has never ran this well / bought used about 3 years ago.

I will look around for add-ons for video editing, sound editing, image editor. I am sure the more familiar it becomes the more exploring I will do to see what all is out there. I took a screen shot of a speed test because I felt it had to be faster, I was not ready for the results and just how much faster Linux was going to be over Win10 on same laptop with same WiFi connection.
Win10 hitting Ookla I could never get my ping down, plus could not get it to open up to full connection speed over WiFi.
Win 10 / ping mid 80's and higher - internet 100 meg download 7 meg upload, I could not get Win 10 to run it less then 50 meg and 5 meg.
Linux Mint 19.1 / hit same Ookla server to find these readings over the exact same WiFi connection
very impressed with Linux at this point.

Spend some time getting familiar with TIMESHIFT

If something goes south....Timeshift WILL save you.

Nice work, Fishy, also at Terminal (Ctrl-Alt-t) type and enter

Code:
sudo ufw enable

This will load up your firewall in real time, and also for every reboot.

I will look around for add-ons for video editing, sound editing, image editor

Last first - GIMP, you likely already have it installed, go to Menu and start to type in gimp.

With the others, Google eg "linux video editing" &c and see what you find, again, you may already have it, just ask.

For any apps from The (Win)Dozer you feel like you can't do without

"alternative to <appname>"

and make the acquaintance of alternativeto.net . Look for the ones listed Linux.

With my Timeshift Tutorial, I am helping a new Member there currently but have a read through. You may wish to choose "watch this thread", going to be a lot of material going in there in short time.

There is also a good tute run by Linux Lite here

Enjoy your Linux, and welcome to Paradise

As a new superuser that's been using windows since 3.1 all the way to 10 I have to say ... you can't go wrong with any of these versions. Run a dual boot systems.

Tobey's middle name is "enthusiastic" now that he has seen the light :)

Just a word to the wise -

Fishy has said, in part

After a few clicks and wiping Win10 from a laptop I had stopped using due to last Win10 update rendered the cooling fan unable to spool to high speed to keep it from over heating.
About 30 minutes or less Win10 was gone Linux 19.1 Cinnamon with Kernel 4.2 was running - I must say SCREAMING FAST.

My highlighting.

The best time to dual-boot (Windows and one Linux) is when Windows is the sole OS.

If you have Linux in place and then install/reinstall Windows, Windows will overwrite the boot files and you will lose access to your Linux. It will still be there, but not able to boot.!!

There are ways around this, but they can be a PITA, and you may lose settings and data with your Linux.

If you HAVE to install/reinstall the (Win) Dozer because of something you cannot do without, then be prepared, and have a separate partition or USB stick or drive containing a current Timeshift screenshot, have a stick with with Linux Mint Live on it (has Timeshift), and restore from the screenshot.

Friday here in Oz, so to all

Avagudweegend !

Linux has become my primary and windows just sits in the shadows now.
Kinda like a new girlfriend that keeps you on your toes.
So far this has been an easy smooth running system, if your leaving windows because your computer is slow you might need to look into other things.
Other things like ram or a new hard-drive either way when you want to get started, I recommend having a thumb drive to keep both systems on. I have a windows thumb drive and a Linux thumb drive so I can keep the format on each correct.
16 GB will work for either system

On the laptop in question - which is the laptop I put Linux on was an Acer Aspire which I bought for $100 about 3 or 4 years ago.
It had Win 7 on it , some where along the way it ended up getting Win 10 on it, after a time it did a huge update. After that update the cooling fan would no longer run at high speed, I found this out after many searches with a ton of reading. Seems the powers that be decided to no longer allow the fan to spool to the high run speed to cool the system down, which would cause it to give a fatal error related to heat resulting in the laptop shutting down. Since you can't roll down after big brother decided to roll up, with no disc or system restore to fix the Win 10 error not thinking someone would click accept on something that should not have been accepted rendered the laptop useless. A search of "Acer Win 10 fan not working"
Hence enter Mint - problem was solved on the laptop, with 4 other working systems there is always a computer to use. No fear of having the Acer laptop only running Linux Mint, now with no sign of Win 10 on it to be found any OS can be installed now. Win 10 is no longer holding the laptop hostage / I did not need to buy a new HDD or SSD to get it back up and running, with Linux being free.

so the cooling fans don't work? And also with windows 10 there's an option to revert back to windows 7 in recovery.
I use an app called>>>>> speccy.<<<<< for temperatures. other than this app here you are looking into getting into Bios / cmos territory this app is not compatible with Linux.

the only thing I have found on windows to manipulate the fan control is to set them of passive.

Fishy can you clarify for us -

Fan working OK on the lappie now that just Mint is there?

If either of you wants to have some core temp and fans monitoring, start a new Thread in, say Hardware, we can tell you there some options you can try. They can be installed from Terminal or from your Synaptic Package Manager, both of which you can make friends of. They include but are not limited to psensor (GUI) and lm-sensors (Terminal).

Nice to see two "new-minters" getting acquainted, it is hard to go wrong starting your Linux journeys with a Mint.

That list os temp sensors etc can also include Gkrellm .....it can be found in Software Manager

Before Mint laptop would get so hot you could not hang on to it.

With MINT fans run / you can actually feel air pushing out the side vents, stays Minty Cool now.

Very cool !!....(pun intended)

Oh I tried all sorts of work arounds and walk throughs to edit the run files of Win 10.
To end up with none of it worked well enough to keep it from throwing errors and rolling back to default - which in turn caused the fan issues over and over again.
It would black screen then shut down / then you would have to wait for the laptop to passive cool down until it would allow it to start again.
I read everything I could find on why so many continued to have the same problems over and over again.
Found a site where they found away to keep it from doing it - but it required you to edit the file directories in 2 separate locations, after any updates to help keep it from over heating.
My thought was and still is / If it is done correctly in the beginning and no other Company is having the same issue of over heating only select laptops that were rolled up to 10 built by select Companies. Why MS don't just code it to not cause the problem in the first place, is what I don't get. They suggest just getting a different or New Product which does not have that issue.

I solved it by Reformatting the full system with Linux - then sticking Win 7 back on it.
Now everybody which will be using it now knows when it prompts them to do MS updates decline any of them.
I'll use it with MINT / our guest users can use the Win 7. The Grand daughter now knows why grandpa told her to leave it alone and stop screwing with it, just because her JR High teacher said to do it does not mean it is a great idea outside the classroom. The teacher is a FAN Club Card carrying member of Microsoft and Intel, I have since showed her there is other ways of doing things.
Gave the Grand Daughter the info to ask teacher, then why is it that all the big players in business and gaming run LINUX on their SERVERS ? asking for a friend, I am going out on a limb guessing I won't be getting a friend request from her teacher.

Before trying Linux first hand on my system I had no reference point for if it would work, or how well if at all it would work.
Now that I have first hand experience of trying Linux to see if it would fix an Acer Aspire no operational high fan speed with Win 10 - Linux fixed it without the need of rewriting system files in 2 places and no need to edit any code lines to attempt to get fans to run properly.

The plus side to all this is now that I know first hand where all the problem is coming from after trying Linux and using it to wipe a drive of any remnants of Win 10 I can now fix the PC tower that has not been used in a very long time which we rolled to 10 when given the chance to do so for free. Looking back FREE was not really FREE after all, but Linux is about to make that tower FREE to be FREE again. Thank goodness I stumbled on to somebody in Real Life that has firsthand experience with Linux OS which is the only OS they use for everything.

Correct the fans would not speed up to cool the system down. Microsoft would not add the support to Acer to get the fans to run correctly after installing Win 10.
Once Win 10 was installed there was no way to revert back to an OS you came from, hence the loop of death it was trapped in.
I did not know if Linux would help with the Fan issue - it not only helped there is no issue at all now.

Keep in the back of your mind that end of life (EOL) for win7 is november 2020.

I have not read back through your post to discover what you still use win 7 for.

Win 10 is no longer holding the laptop hostage

I love it when they talk like that, gives me goosebumps. :D;)

Just for gaming - the gaming peripherals that I invested too much money no longer are supported for anything above 7 / the games that I play came out before 7 / the 2 games the grand daughter likes to play are before Win 8 and are not supported by Win 10.
The purpose for Win 7 is so my games which are not supported by Microsoft can be played with my gaming stuff.
Steel Series which is my gaming stuff refuses to offer any support for anything but Windows
which they no longer support anything bought before Windows 8
looked for something on Linux to get them to run with no luck so far.
So for now I will use Win 7 to run my game and gaming stuff - everything else will be Linux.

So for now I will use 2 Dance Partners until I figure out a solutions to have 1 Dance Party / at which time I hope to say good bye and good riddance to MS.
