New install help

I got KM Linux to boot from the live usb. I like it the best so far for my needs and desktop styling. I'll try mint mate again and let you know. I'm really thinking it has something to do with the cinnamon desktop...

Pardon the interruption, I think I ran into this before w/ a Mint install and I corrected it by reinstalling, anyway... did you get to the end screen where you are asked to remove the install media and reboot?

No, my issue is that I can't even boot from the live installation media. Mint cinnamon and something called Deepin are the only two so far giving me problems booting from the live usb. I got mint 19 xfce to install today with no issues and runs decent. If someone could help me out I'm looking to use widgets, screenlets or desklets...whatever they are called on linux. Either on the my current os (mint 19 xfce) or another. I've looked but couldn't find much info in regards to running them on the xfce desktop under mint. There's so many distros and de's it's a bit mind boggling but I've been having a blast messing around with them.

Oh, wow. Ok, I misunderstood your issue. That is very odd and one I'll have to defer to @wizardfromoz or @atanere and the like aka, the true experts! Seriously though, both have been invaluable!

I share your enjoyment in the various DEs available, that is what led me to my foray into "multibooting". My inability to pick one DE was causing me to distro hop but what I came to realize was it was the different DEs that I liked more than different distros. Personally I have settled on Manjaro which is an Arch based derivative that offers 3 officially supported flavors (KDE, XCFE, and GNOME) plus quite a few community maintained flavors.

My personal choices are:
KDE
XCFE
Deepin
followed by Cinnamon

As to your question, I believe they are "desklets" in XCFE and Cinnamon, KDE they are called widgets (incidentally if you are looking for widgets and desktop customization KDE is the way to go).

Thanks for the links I appreciate it. I did find a different distro I'm liking so far. Something called Antergos, has a bunch of desktops you can choose from upon installation. I'm thinking my issue is something to do with the desktops that won't run on my system for some reason. I initially tried using deepin on the first install of antergos but I got a black screen with a cursor and it went no further. I reinstalled using the kde plasma desktop and I love it so far.

My pleasure. Amtergos is great! I used it just before going back to Manjaro. They we’re having some issues with their installer software and I threw my hands up more so because I was fighting a battle with a nvidia gpu. You mentioning Antergos sparked my curiosity again and I just installed their Deepin flavor on my back up machine! They did one hell of job with Deepin! If you’re interested I’m about to start a new thread because I tried to install multiple Antergos flavors on one laptop and I’m having some grub2 issues!

Yea definitely interested. I wanted to try deepin but sadly that and cinnamon don't work on my machine for some reason. I've been too busy playing around with antergos kde lately to do anymore digging around about this issue. I think I found a new obsession...bye bye windows.

G'day Mate if you see this while you are online, or whenever :):

Linux Distros do not by default enable your firewall. Puppy distros will prompt you.

In Antergos, go to your Terminal and enter (the line with a # is a comment)

Code:
sudo pacman -S ufw

#followed by

sudo ufw enable

Enter your password (no movement, security) and Enter and you will get a message saying the (ufw) Uncomplicated Fire Wall is active and will restart every time you boot/reboot.

Cheers

Good to know, I appreciate it.

Just a quick update. I am able to add the individual desktop environments on Antergos that didn't work previously. They still don't work if I select one for the initial installation...hmm.
