I was wondering what people think of doing when a new version comes out, like for example Mint recently along with others.

Do by choice do a complete clean install due to the many changes in the version
Do you say no, I'll just upgrade

Just run the upgrade and we'll have a shorter thread :p:D:)

Aussie sense of humour.

I'm first in, best dressed, with an "Upgrade", but not for reasons which are readily apparent, and my circumstances are quite possibly unique within this Forum.

Get behind surveys such as this, folks, they can provide us with new perspectives, and isn't that what Linux is all about?

If you place a comment, be sure you vote before you leave ... or I'll turn you into a toad.

Nice one, Ptah (where's that thumbs up icon, @Rob ??)

I usually prefer a clean install, but I do not always follow that wisdom. And recent reports of issues with Mint and Thunderbird are appreciated, and causing me to stop any thoughts of upgrading Mint right now. Also, when in the mood for a clean install and everything that will be needed is backed up, it is a good time to take an intermediate hop and try another distro for awhile... something new and different.

Good question/poll, @Ptahhotep!

Cheers

Thank you. I have tried both methods so I could see which worked best and based on my experience a clean install is the best as there are not (usually) any problems with it while the upgrade can produce orphan things. In either case I always do a terminal apt-get autoclean once they've completed

I am approaching this question from perhaps a slightly different angle ...I opened a topic HERE where I started with this blurb :
When shifting from one version of Linux Mint to another, i usually opt for the 'upgrade' option in the update manager.
I have reinstalled a couple of times....usually when I have fouled the whole thing up.

Not in love with reinstalls......the install itself is a piece of cake....its the "resetting" of all the many and various settings in thunderbird and 'attaching' the 300Gb separate hdd to take downloads, and all the mundane crap, including settings in apps, etc etc etcthat must be attended to in order to make the thing work to my satisfaction, ....It would easily take me a day to set it up totally.

However....with the onset of LM 19...soon.....I have it in mind to dispense with the 'upgrade' option.......and will instead opt for a 'clean' install

My reasoning for opting for the fresh install is quite simple. I have plenty of ssd room, and plenty of ram (16gb ddr4)....yet my system has slowly but surely...slowed down. Nothing calamitous, but it is still there.

Not enough for me to reach for the brandy bottle......but it still irks me at times.

I know from experience that a clean install will fly like the wind.

So the choice is simple.......upgrade and the very same irksome slow bits will still be present....
or
Clean install where speed will return in line with the ssd and stacks of ram.

As i said in the other topic I have a dislike for reinstalls after a clean install.....the fiddly crap just drives me insane.

So, after all that explanation....today i would opt for an upgrade. Tomorrow....who knows...depends on the state of the rebelliousness (present in all of us)....yes I can solve the problem, but do I really want to ...?...

I see your reasoning. Have you tried sorting things out using : https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/mint-cinnamon-first This site is very good in many ways particularly if you have an SSD and you can improve other settings. I have followed the advice on it and haven't had any problems as a result. I am not promoting this site it is just one I have found useful and you might even get improvement in what you have now, by following the tips.

After doing a back up I found no problems with re-installation and so the whole thing was completed in half an hour.
I had realised you had done that, which is why I posted this slightly differently btw. I was interested to see what peeps thoughts were and what their experiences were so we could help and inform the whole community of the options and what most went for

Thanks ptahhotep, been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

It is also remotely possible that I am being stone cold lazy......and just dont wanna do the hard yards.

My set up after clean install is fairly complex......I have this thing tuned to be just like its owner......fast paced and suffers no bs.

All good...tomorrow could well be a clean install day
