Linux Mint 19 “Tara” Cinnamon released!

Yes, they may promote Cinnamon just a bit more, but not too much. The lead dev at Mint, Clem, is also on the MATE dev team (or he was last I knew). Cinnamon is a very nice DE, but I've had some issues in the past with it, so long ago now I don't really remember what it was. I think Cinnamon needs more resources. MATE seems a bit lighter on resource needs, and I think XFCE is the lightest on resources of them all. Something for everyone!:D

Hhhmmm so do I download Cinnamon, MATE or Xfce?

Bugger it, I'll download them all :D

Thanks, guys, for sharing

If you have 18.3 in any flavour just do the upgrade in that one - just remember to follow all the steps and it works - oh sorry ahead of myself, there is a post by Clem how to do so. That way you can see if you like it - or do a live in each version. Personally I love the Cinnamon and it is fast

Just a word of caution to what the venerable Pharaoh has said (Hi Ptah :)):

Before you do that, use 18.3's builtin Timeshift to take a snapshot for recovery purposes. ;)

Brian (@Condobloke ) and I came a gutser couple of years ago, using Clem's Tute for going from 17.3 to 18.0. Brian ended up doing a clean install, I revisited the Tute and was lucky 2nd time around.

Hopefully Clem's Tute is better this time around, and the fact that @Ptahhotep has succeeded is a good sign.

My Tute on Timeshift is here

... and @arochester found one recently within the Linux Lite Manual itself (Timeshift started shipping with them in v4)

Hi Wiz, now come on mate I was going to tell you how to suck eggs was I ;) I knew you'd know that bit about timeshift, with another I would have mentioned it. If you follow the guide you have to do it before doing the upgrade or you can't do so:) From what I've been reading elsewhere if you really want to keep things as they are the upgrade is the best way of going about it, it does take time, but better that and have things working as you want than lose them. I' Oh and I am not a Pharaoh, but thanks for the promotion:) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ptahhotep - have a great weekend my friend :)

Love it, Ptah :) - Wizard has egg on face, fortunately I love eggs :p

In my defence, I will say

Hopefully Clem's Tute is better this time around,

... covers me?

... and of course he has, with Timeshift.

There is much to like about Tara, v19, but one of the things I don't like already is that they have an inbuilt Nag in the Software Updater which pursues you relentlessly to set up scheduled Timeshift snapshots. I use On Demand snapshots, and it works better within my environment.

Other than that, I am pleased that they regard the product so highly, as do Linux Lite 4.0 (and before them, a relatively obscure spin off from Manjaro called Manjaro 'Strit', which was the first to ship with TS).

Over time, I hope that parts of my Timeshift Tute that say how to install it on this and that, will become redundant :D

Cheers Mate and

Mate you are a legend in your own lunchtime :D

I knew the site but had not been there for a while, now I am bookmarking it.

They did not have that option with 18.3 which is where Timeshift was first incorporated into their packing list.

You are officially promoted to Pharaoh o_O

Cheers
