User Mode Linux

Yes, it is a nice tool, but it isn't perfect either. Nothing is, I guess.

Of course my friend!!! Should not be perfect
I'm afraid of the day they will be perfect!!!

Now that's handy. :)

I am working two directions atm (at the moment) -
  1. Adding more Distros to the lineup
  2. Networking/folder-sharing between Host & Guest
Current lineup is two Distros as per screenshot:

and the articles I am referencing are

and

Later, gotta eat and sleep

@wizardfromoz

I have some gaps hahahah :D on the above links.
Once you complete your search , I will revert

cheers !!!

Hello @wizardfromoz

Do you have any update?? My brain become jam.
I'm not able to insert the virtual optical disk - Guest addition. Whatever I found in web is not helpful at all
& regarding configuring network between machines I have a progress but not that much.
I will revert soon form home, when I will have better reception.

Afternoon all :)

Capta, just briefly:
  1. I'm not able to insert the virtual optical disk - Guest addition
    - can you expand on that? Show us a screenshot or copy & paste an error or warning.
  2. For those of you whom might receive an error or warning after first having been successful in the method I am using - those being as shown in the screenshot below, there is a simple remedy:
  3. DC8nLtL.png
    - this will occur if you have your .isos stored in a different partition, for example not

in /home/username/Downloads but in /dev/sdxy . In my case, I am keeping them currently in /dev/sda31 on my HDD, but quite often I keep them on an entirely different physical drive, such as /dev/sdc.

The simple solution is to mount the partition where the .iso is stored (which can be as simple as clicking it in your File Manager), and only then launching VirtualBox.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR THE OP AND FOR THE VIEWERS

The method I have shown so far for the OP to get started is not the stereotypical (usual) method for using a VM.

That would be to perhaps allow a space of 20 GB on your Host Distro, and then perform a full install for the Distro that is to be the Guest.

I chose simply to run VB off the downloaded .iso, so that we could establish that the OP's machine could run VirtualBox, as he was having trouble with it initially, before we upgraded his Version of VB. Another benefit of using the .iso is that the space required is minimal, hardly more than the size of the .iso, which in the case of Anarchy is 1.0 GB.

If he, or you, do not see that as a preferred solution, simply backtrack and remove/delete what you have done and then you can restart a clean version of VirtualBox, and choose the default for storage, as seen below

Earlier, I chose the first option.

I'll be back with more once I have created a summary of where we are at, and I will also explore those networking/filesharing options that the OP was hoping for.

@CptCharis ... yes, I get where you are coming from now :)

I am having problems myself, and I am barely one step ahead of you, and rapidly falling behind.:(

You can download the Guest additions .iso from here, for 5.2.8

https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/5.2.8/

... but there is some question my my mind whether that is best done on your Host (LM 18.3) or within the Guest (Anarchy in your case).

If I get any answers I will post them here.

the issue is that I can see the addition in both guest OS. (no need for download )
I'm running Anarchy & Kali.

only in Kali giving me permission for installing but finally I get this

Just a holding post, really. I have been spending about 4 hours a day on this subject, and am going to have to scale down my contributions, regrettably.

Which annoys me, because I am like a dog with a bone, where problems are concerned . Regrets to the OP. :(

It seems that a lot of these dramas revolve around the Linux 4.13 kernel, and you can establish this for yourself with a Google search using keywords "virtualbox linux kernel 4.13".

It affects VirtualBox 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2, and I have tried it over two (2) LInux Mints, an Ubuntu, a Peppermint 8, and others which are on my system.

I went as far as downloading an alternative, VMWare, only to find that it, too, has some dramas with 4.13 series and spits out an error about insufficient memory (I have 8 GB, and swap of 4GB enabled for this exercise). There is a workaround for this, but it is complex.

I have enclosed a PDF of some of my workings, be warned it is 7 - 8 pages, but it shows some of the steps I was taking, for those interested.

Bottom line is that you can get VB to work if you "dial back" to kernel 4.10 series, but I am not aware whether you would then miss out on any security patches.

Also, note that with the 5.0 series of VB, you need to have virtualbox-qt package installed as well, for it to work properly, which is not always clear with the install process.

Cheers

Hi all, yes I'm fine... but I'm in the middle of the worst part of my work cycle: 3 night shifts, only 1 day off (today), and then 3 day shifts start tomorrow. I've been trying to keep up, but I have not yet tested VBox to reach the failures you guys have found. It sounds like the trouble is beyond my skill anyway, but I will try to take a look also when I get some days off together (and when my wife will ignore me for awhile ).

Cheers
