How to reverse " and @ symbols

I was having trouble with this thread as I could not see where to write my question, but alack and alas I is 'ere.
I was being helped with my large problem with Ubuntu 16.04 by ?Wizard...." and the whole thing went down. That sounds as though I am blaming me' ol' mate from up North, but I will blame me and the computer.

I am back now. and have he above problem with " and @ being reversed.

I di have this once before and fixed it,,,,How? who knows!!!!!!

I'd check your keyboard layout settings.... you may have a keyboard selected that does not truly match that which you are using. You may need to switch UK versus US, or vice versa.

Peter if you fire up your File Manager (icon of a filing cabinet, on left, near the top), do the following:

1. In Files (the File Manager, aka "Nautilus"), go down on the left-hand side to "Computer" and click, this will open a pane full of folders on the right

2. Scroll down through those to "Default" and double-click

3. In default, scroll down past the folders and you will find a file called simply "keyboard", double-click it.

4. Post the content of that file here

Mine looks like this

Know that one, Brian (lol), but wanted to see what Peter has, first, in case there are any other issues.

You do have Default, Peter, but I may not have explained it well enough.

I'll show a couple of screenshots (3). Each one will have the target object highlighted.

Brian's (@Condobloke 's) suggestion is a route to adding the correct keyboard, but you must not remove the "wrong" keyboard first, or else you may be left without keyboard access.

It is done now, bit I have to use the Yankee keyboard. Thank you for all your help wiz. It has been an experience in testing my learning curve.

Okay Wiz! looks like I have just started: Are you happy to continue with your invaluable assistance? I hope you are.

I have installed the keyboard layout that puts the symbols in the right place. Now I find that although Libre write has accepted English Australia it will not allow me a spell check. I have tried to follow the instructions in the Help section but it does not work for me. Where now? PS a Spell Check works in this forum.

This "darling Kitten" is decimating my office paperwork, I do not have a need for a shredder anymore.

In Writer, have you gone to Tools in the Menu bar at top?

There, it has Spelling and Grammar or press F7 and Automatic Spell Checking - Shift+F7

If you click the latter, a tick will appear and it will always be on.

If you have already tried this and no joy, let me know, but I may be in and out a bit - we are selling our old house to pay off the construction loan on the new, and I am doing the conveyancing to save money.

That Check, is that like a Tartan, or summit?

I have tried that wot ya' sed and the spelling and grammar is ticked on. In write the language is English Australian but the keyboard is English US...So..........

Funny man, must be the fresh sea air influence in Coffs ?

Contract went unconditional this arvo, got through building and pest inspection, so we'll be happy campers on 14th Feb - Valentine's Day and the 52nd anniversary for the introduction of Decimal Currency.

On business - try typing a couple of lines with Australian (English) English and American English and see if the spell-check notes a difference.

Eg

shopping centre - shopping center

colour - color

&c.

Let us know how you go.

BTW - US keyboard and Australian keyboard are basically identical, it is likely you somehow had another keyboard, from install eg English.

Most say I am funny peculiar!!!!! There is no wriggly lines no matter what I do. A spell checker works in some programs that are generated from the net.

I know how it is with the flies in this hot weather!!!!!.

I should send you one of my short stories so you can get into my sense of humour, as it is!? SEE! yankee spell check on here.

I have spell check in English US but not in the others????? I can select language for "Selection" I think that means for current writings.

Hi Peter, I'll show you what I have tried so far, with screenshots from Ubuntu:

This, just from a document opened and typed in a few off the top of my head. Note no squiggly lines.

Click the image, it will enlarge, clicking it again will restore to usual. Hope it is clear.

You can see that

1. I have automatic spellcheck switched on, and that I have
2. English (Australia) as the default of a number of options

If you don't have these options, I will have to think about it.

And I note, myself, that even with spellcheck on, it did not query the alternate spellings.

In most of my uses of Libre Office Writer, I get the query, and I have the opportunity to "add to dictionary" which I do frequently when using esoteric Linux terms.

Not sure how soon I might come up with an answer, but there are others here well-versed in such matters, so if someone swings by, by all means take their lead.

In the meantime, keep on soldiering on (with Codral)?

Tomorrow I will try to make time to check a few of the Linux Distros where I use word processing regularly, check for the "add to dictionary" aspect and see if I can glean what is different. This has me intrigued.
