Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone knows what I can do to fix this; I'm using Mint 18.3, with Firefox and Waterfox for my web browsers. I lose a lot of work when the internet connection just gets lost. When it does, I check it on my Mac laptop, which is on the same network, and I'm still connected. No issues and I'm even using Waterfox on my Mac...

Hi @Hans, and welcome back. The Wizard has a big project going on, so he might be a bit spotty checking in, but I'm sure he'll pop in (in a puff of smoke) if he can. And I will try to help, if I can, in the meantime.

I guess the comparison you're making is from a Mac laptop to your Mac desktop, right? I'd doubt that the browsers are your trouble... more likely the connection hardware and/or software. I have found many cases of WiFi hardware dropping connections with Linux, but you didn't tell us that wireless is the problem (though that will be my guess).

So... wireless? And if so, can you possibly make a wired ethernet connection to your router instead? Sometimes even wired connections can be dropped too, but it usually isn't as bad as wireless... and it might be the easy fix to your problem.

If wireless is the problem, and if it is required, then let's have a look at what your network hardware is... please give us the output of the following command (though you can remove the mac address, if you wish).

Code:
inxi -n

Thanks!

Thanks Atanere,

I should have mentioned the connection type; the desktop is cabled to the modem and is the one losing connection. The laptop is on wireless, but does okay. Weird; I would have thought it would be the other way around. Here is the output from the command you gave me:
inxi -n
Network: Card-1: NVIDIA MCP79 Ethernet driver: forcedeth
IF: enp0s10 state: up speed: 1000 Mbps duplex: full
mac: 34:15:9e:2d:a2:c4
Card-2: Broadcom BCM4321 802.11a/b/g/n driver: b43-pci-bridge
IF: N/A state: N/A mac: N/A

Thanks!

Hey Hans. Yes, the ethernet can drop connection too. So... let's still do the same test, but vice-versa: unplug your ethernet and try out your wireless and test for a bit. Different network adapter and may work to your satisfaction, although WiFi is not as fast, of course.

Gotta run, working night shift. Will also try to Google more about your ethernet card and see if anything pops up.

Cheers

Hi Hans hope you don't mind but I was having similar problems using a Firefox based browser and while I find some fixes on easy linux tips, I have come up with my own answer using some research on line and that is to have a back up browser. The best advice out there seems to go for Chrome or Opera - I have gone for Chrome not Chromium, because Chrome updates itself while Chromium well you have to wait for. I have found Chrome more stable than the Firefox types so use that when I need that stability and the other one when I am not that bothered. You could just need to tweak, but from what I've seen just change and import your book marks across

Hi Hans, I was just thinking of you, running updates on Pearl Linux :p

And it was 'Sylvia' 18.3 Cinnamon now, yes?

Can you tell me, from Synaptic, or Terminal, whether you have firmware-b43-installer installed?

Cheers and

Avagudweegend

BTW - haven't used Waterfox myself but can install if it will help - I use Chrome as a backup for some Distros, and Chromium for others.
