I am looking for Linux Mint compatible software for a cross stitch pattern maker that will allow me to choose my own designs and colors, and I would prefer a disk I can download from; does anyone know of such? Have already tried those I found on-line, and they did not work (either they were not Linux compatible, or they allowed me very little control over what I was trying to do).

I only know of one cross-stitch program for Linux offhand:
KXStitch - which is a KDE/QT based application.

I had to install it on my parents Linux PC many years ago. My mum and sister used to use it quite a lot. I'm fairly certain there's a version of KXStitch v1.3 (old KDE4 based version) in Debians repos. Hopefully there will also be a version in Mints repositories.

Open a terminal and try running:
Code:
apt search kxstitch
to see if there is a version available.

If a package is available you should be able to install it via:
Code:
sudo apt install kxstitch

If there is no package available directly from Mint, there may be some PPA's somewhere that you could install it from.
A quick search yielded this:
https://websetnet.com/cross-stitch-software-kxstitch-2-0-available-ubuntu-ppa/

The above link mentions a PPA with a build of KXStitch v2.0 - which is the latest stable version, based on the KDE 5 framework. Apparently built for distros based on Ubuntu16.04 and 16.10. It mentions that the PPA should work for Mint18 - so you might be in luck!

Failing that - the only other way to get hold of it would be to download the source-code for it and manually build and install it.

KXStitch is a part of the KDE software collection, so the source code can be downloaded from the projects current home-page:
https://userbase.kde.org/KXStitch

If you do find that you need to manually build and install it and you need some help - let me know and I'll see if I can help to guide you through the process!

It might take me some time to respond though, because I'll have to download the source, determine the dependencies and try building it myself.

Thanks for all this research, but I should have told you that I have Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa", so I don't think this one would work for me because it is configured for LM 18.

Hi all

@Phylly is likely referring to output similar to below:

Code:
chris@RosaCinnamonG ~ $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/kxstitch
'This PPA does not support trusty'
Cannot add PPA: ''This PPA does not support trusty''.

Now there is a workaround for this, which could involve tweaking either of Software Sources (Additional Repositories), or editing /etc/apt/sources.list as Root/Administrator … and adding a word “xenial” for Xenial Xerus, which is the Ubuntu 16.04 series and also what the Linux Mint 18 series is based on.

Jas is likely better positioned to explain this than I, as rather than being “trusty” here, I am very “rusty”, lol.

OR

Rather than reinvent the wheel, and if you, Phylly, are content with a slightly older version of KXStitch:

This article tells how to install it on Linux Mint 'Qiana' which is v17.0 and it works across 17.1 'Rebecca', 17.2 'Rafaela' and your own 17.3 'Rosa'.

I had a spare 'Rosa' kicking around, and I have just installed it. Here is a screenshot

I just picked a random wallpaper to colour it up.

I ended up with KXStitch v1.2.0 out of the exercise (takes a few minutes, with a large number of files to install) and this may be sufficient for your purposes. Once installed, you will find it under Menu-Graphics, or at Menu start typing kxstitch.

In the app itself, under Help-about KXStitch, a website is listed but I have not gone further.

Of course, there is always a “C: None of the Above”, lol, that might include upgrading to LM 18 and then Jas's directions will work, so the choices are yours.

Hope this helps rather than hinders.

Ooops! Sorry, I thought you were using Mint18.x, not 17.x.... In that case, adding the PPA in the link Wiz shared above should do the trick. It might be a slightly older version, but it will work just as well!
