Hey guys, finally decided to divorce from my wife of 18 years, windows. I'm trying install Ubuntu with a DVD with little success, I've downloaded the latest version and unzipped it onto a my DVD RW, I then set BIOS to boot on CD which it does, I see the DVD being read and then....nothing, it fails to recognise ubuntu on the DVD. Any suggestions ?

The file system on the DVD is UDF if that makes any difference ?

Ok guys, didn't have any clean DVD RW so tried on a USB stick, burned the ISO file on the USB stick no problem then went into Bios to make the USB first bootable device, couldn't find it in the list, there is the following,

USB - FDD
USB - ZIP/LS
USB - CDROM

Tried all three no success, my mobo is about 6 years old, will I have to use a DVD ?

It looks like it yes. FDD is floppy, ZIP/LS is the old zip drives, CDROM is a USB cdrom.

Excellent, ordered a few DVD+R from Ebay but I'll try the "plop" first, thanks to you both.

Well Im back boys and typing this on Ubuntu :)
The plop didn't work for me as i wasn't clever enough to understand it, anyway managed to burn it onto a DVD and have done an install which is sharing the partition with my 5 year old vista.

First impressions, very impressed, looks very slick and professional, happy to see that all my Microsoft Word documents are compatible. downloaded GIMP and am very impressed with that.

One question, do I need to download the latest Nvidia driver for my (albeit old) graphics card ?

Ive clicked on the useeful link you posted, as Ubuntu is new to me I don't know where 'system' is to search for the driver.....

How do you like it so far.....? :) Believe it or not, there once was a time when MS Office and Libre Office were incompatible..... :) Now, if I don't have my Surface RT or my Laptop, but just ONE of the two, I can STILL work on Documents..... :D (Though I'd RATHER be using Linux..... ;) )

Kingsoft office is good as well (though there is still no chart creation yet...)
