Live CD with persistence

I was just curious as to how to create a live cd (using a thumb drive or whatever) with any distro you want. For example, if I wanted to create a portable version of Slackware that I can put on a thumb drive and boot off any computer, how would I go about doing that?

I understand that there are portable distros based on Slack, but how would you do this WITH Slack?

Also, it is important that this is a persistent drive, meaning that when I make changes on the system they are saved.

Well, depending on the size of the drive you can just install Slack to the USB drive like any other hard drive. Just make sure you have all the needed drivers.....

I've tried that but it doesn't boot correctly... Is there something that I need to do to get it to boot correctly? That is just using the generic Slackware install, so whatever drivers come with Slackware are there.

Slackware Live: a live CD/DVD/USB solution for Slackware
Slackware Live is a live DVD/USB/NFS build and install tool written for Slackware / Slackware64 / Slackware-ARM Linux:

  • support GPT and legacy MBR partitionned disks, UEFI and CSM (legacy / BIOS) booting
  • contains all the necessary to convert an installed system to a live system and vice-versa;
  • it doesn’t need any kernel recompile, but it support seamlessly AUFS if your kernel support them;
  • no changes are needed on the system to make live; the live system boots like an installed one (100% compatible with stock Slackware);
  • support persistent changes;
  • ...

You need to expend a bit more on "doesn't boot correctly". Not much to go on there.

A live system - i.e. one designed to run as a typical (read only) livecd is not quite the same thing as installing Slackware on a USB and using that as a portable system.

If you read about Slackware-live(the thing that @arochester posted), that is exactly what I want. I'm probably just going to give that a try, even with its horrible instructions. If that doesn't work I might try SlackEx.

No gonna lie guys, I can't figure this out. The Slackware-live thing is beyond me and SlackEx doesn't support EFI booting. I guess I'll have to play around with Slackware and maybe some of the other portable distros. I know that there is a way to get EFI booting on Porteus, and I think Slax and Salix come with EFI booting out of the box. I'll have to try them all! >:)

UPDATE:

I got what I wanted using Porteus, which is a portable GNU/Linux distro that is based on Slackware and is basically backwards compatible. After a few hours of playing around with a EFI booting script that I found, I finally got it to boot and run (really good actually). In fact, you can even boot in this on a Macbook Pro! It was kinda tricky but nothing a little GNU/Linux magic can't fix.

If anyone wants to know how it's done I can post a thread or something :)

ps: I posted this while using it ;)

Hello Kryyll - I signed up just to post this reply to you... I am facing same situation, yes would you please create a new thread or other method for tutorial and give your step-by-step on how you achieved this result? Thank you very much for your help.
