Awesome Wallpapers made with GIMP

"tutor4u" is a wonderful YouTube channel with great tutorials on how to create awesome images in Gimp, Blender, (I think Inkscape) and some other open-source programs too! It's helped me out a lot, so you could probably pick up some good tips from him.

Thanks a lot Adam! I will give it a go and in around a months time you will see the worst GIMP image of your life!

Here's another wallpaper I made recently! I made the tiles with a simple low-res gradient and the scaled those up to a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The hand and paint drips are both edited stock photos.

Wow guys, some of your work is awesome! Do you know of any good sites to learn GIMPs UI on? I am terrible with any form of art but I would love to make some custom work for 2d Indie games!

To further the other answers to this question, there is a great book by Akkana Peck called Beginning Gimp: From Novice to Professional which is a comprehensive guide to using Gimp. I've owned a copy of the 2nd edition (published in 2008) for a good few years now and would recommend it to anybody! Saying that, the 3rd edition of the book should be coming out very soon, so it might be worth waiting until that is finally released!

Also here in the UK, Future Publishing (who also publish Linux Format) recently released a bookazine called Gimp: The Complete Guide. Not sure how good this is, but I have ordered a copy. Still waiting for it to be delivered!

Update: My copy of 'Gimp: The Complete Guide' just arrived in the post this morning and I have to say it is REALLY good.

'The Complete Guide' is only 98 pages, containing 28 simple, practical tutorials, covering pretty much every aspect of Gimp. The tutorials are split into four sections: Get Set Up, Learn the Basics, Essential Skills and Projects.

Being a bookazine, it is not as comprehensive as Akkana Pecks 'Beginning Gimp: From Novice to Professional', but there is a lot of content crammed into those 98 pages. And it is only £9.99 (compared to £40 for 'From Novice to Professional'), so great value too!

The tutorials presented in the book are easy to follow, with plenty of screenshots to help guide you and are suitable for anybody who is new to Gimp; Be they rank amateurs who are just starting out with photo editing, or seasoned photoshop pros who are trying Gimp for the first time. To appease any hardcore Adobe fans, it even dedicates a page to customising Gimps UI and keyboard shortcuts to make it look and behave more like Photoshop!

I'd highly recommend a copy of 'Gimp: The Complete Guide' to anybody who wants to learn more about the many tools available in Gimp and how to use them effectively!

Nice wallpapers.

Is the quality from the GIMP (like aliasing, resizing, etc) as good as Photoshop? I know the GIMP is incredibly powerful, and a lot of people use it professionally.

I assume the quality is the same, but I have never compared the two myself. Other people say one is better than the other (depending on which one they prefer). I am pleased with the quality of Gimp. I use Gimp to make all of the slides for my articles and most of Jarret's. (See the main page)

Awesome creation! loved your wallpapers especially the planets and the ripple. The blue gradient background looked so cool. You are a GIMP master!

GIMP was one of the first program i used even before photoshop. This was the program that made me want to become a graphics artist!

BTW I am banned from my local Library......

Well boys some of the wallpapers you've made are very impressive, well done. Just started using GIMP myself so I need a few months to add a few contributions :0
