Thinking of installing Linux

Hey, I have a 1tb external hard drive that I was think of using to install Linux on. If I were to install Linux on it, would I loose all the data I have on it? I know I can boot from it because it shows up as a hard drive disk. Would I notice any performance increase between my Windows 7 64-bit and Linux distro. I have a dual-core AMD with Mobility Radeon HD 4200 integrated graphics and my performance in games is not always exceptional. Which distro, if any, would boost my performance? How hard is it to choose between which hard drive to boot from? Would Linux be easily uninstalled if I did not like it? I am no Linux expert, and that is why I am posting. I do not want to charge head first at this and not have a clue as to what I am doing.

So on this hard drive do you have windows installed on it also?
If so you could dual boot Linux along side windows.

Or if you just wanna try it. Install Linux on a usb drive. Easily done with unetbootin available for windows.
Try Ubuntu starting out it's good for beginners.
If you put it on a usb you could test it by booting up into it then instead of installing go down and pick "Try Ubuntu without installing"

Very simple or you could try slax or any other distro that offers a livecd. Which of course a variety of them do for ease of use.

Thanks! Already solved. Moved everything off the external HD and used Wubi to install Ubuntu on it. I am now dual-booting.

Awesome! While wubi is easy it's very limited I believe.

but how are you liking things so far?

It has been a struggle, but enjoyable. My flash player was corrupted from the start and it took an hour to get that straighten out. My FPS in Minecraft has plummeted. Sometimes my mouse stops working, and the multi-workstation breaks. Team Fortess cannot load a server and Ubuntu freeze when I start installing something. Other than everything going wrong so far, I love it. The font is fabulous and the multi-workstation, when it works, is convenient.

If you are enjoying it so far, I would suggest you commit to a proper install. If you already moved everything off the external drive to accommodate the wubi install then you should consider grabbing a proper install disk booting from it and installing it to the external drive properly. It will certainly run faster and you will enjoy the experience more.

ubuntu is definitely not the faster performer as far as linux distros go. If you want fast and easy give mint a go. if you are enjoying ubuntu give it a proper install. also you have probably already thought of this, but running an OS on an external USB drive will also reduce performance.

you should try booting live distro via usb to see how it runs on you computer:)
Try Linuxmint, Pinguy 12.04LTS or any distro you wish

I am a little late but an easier method would of been to use VirtualBox.
