I have an HP Elitedesk 800 G5 SFF, running Windows 11, which replaced a Toshiba All in One that failed after nine years of use. Although not a new a machine the HP is the best computer I have yet owned. The Toshiba ran Windows 10 and Ubuntu 22.04 on a dual boot system. I have repeatedly tried to do the same for the HP. Nothing I have done has worked. I have tried many options from web page help sources. The Ubuntu Live cd did start but came up with a blue screen and error message 'Verification failed ( 0 x 1A ) security violation'. I managed to make a bootable USB drive and although Ubuntu did load it would not install. I followed advice and changed BIOS setting but still nothing worked. I tried Rufus as another option which did not work either. I am now at a loss.

I have been using Windows from when it was a DOS program to the present day. I am comfortable with Windows but there is some of it I do not like. I have only had a brief experience with Ubuntu and whilst not as slick as Windows I am reminded of the earlier days of DOS. I would like to keep Windows as there are a few programs that I really like and have bought. I would also like to explore Linux further but I am not yet confident of a complete move from Windows.

Is this a problem that can be solved or am I just asking too much as help from a distance is not always easy?

Rest assured this can be solved, have you tried using anything other than Rufus? I used balenaEtcher with Lubuntu and was able to install (not dual boot) it on my old computer which I use as a daily now except for heavy gaming which i use my gaming pc. I believe there are a few ideas on your situation lviing on ubuntu's forums:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/145...0x1a-security-violation-from-22-04-1-live-usb
https://askubuntu.com/questions/145...1a-security-violation-while-installing-ubuntu

Are you using an old version like 22.04.1? One of the suggestions is that the version is being flagged by secure boot and you can use a newer version ie. 22.04.2, if you are already using 22.04.2 you could try to disable secure boot, boot the 22.04.1 ISO, install, update, and then enable Secure Boot again. Best of Luck.

Welcome to the forums
I am running my Mint LMDE [Debian based] on a HP Pro=desk, prior to this I ran Mint [Ubuntu based] both installed without issue,
as yours is W11, make sure you disable windows quick-start [fast boot] use Balena Etcher to burn the ISO to USB , use a good quality pen-drive formatted to Fats 32 or X-Fats and you should not have any problems

I have an HP Elitedesk 800 G5 SFF
Read here https://ubuntu.com/certified/201912-27553
It says:
Pre-installed in some regions with a custom Ubuntu image that takes advantage of the system’s hardware features and may include additional software. Standard images of Ubuntu may not work well, or at all.
And here, too:

Hope this helps! :)

First of all thank you for responding to my post. This is an extraordinary beginning to Linux.org. I downloaded the Ubuntu 20.04.2 and created a bootable USB using balenaEtcher, both as advised and I now have a dual boot system. I also first tried Mint cinnamon but this also failed. There was no download for Mint LMDE on the Mint website but regardless I am now very happy. Thank you again.

Thank you again. I did try to install Mint LMDE after your reply but it I got the same error message and blue screen as before, so it appears I have Ubuntu regardless. I have been playing for a few days and I can find nothing negative to say, just a shame I left it so late to try.
