Hand Surgery

There should be some Item in your home that would work as a 1 pound weight. Improvise. Great to hear you've made such great progress. Enjoy you Holiday season :)

Thanks!

I'll start with a 8 ounce glass maybe with a small amount of water in it.

Alex, an empty plastic bottle with a handle on it, like a fruit juice bottle,

We have ones here that have a capacity of 2 ltrs - 4.4 pounds.

The weight of the bottle is negligible, so you can put a pint of water in it - one pound, two pints, two pounds and so on.

Chris.

tub of margarine/butter.....500grams...1lb...?

Thanks, good idea Chris!

I found more idea's here:

Suggestions?

Those elastic bands that you saw during PT are excellent and inexpensive. A set will have varied levels of resistance and won't be expensive.

My physical therapist never gave me elastic bands to work with.
She just showed me manual hand exercises and how to hold a pool ball and rotate the wrist while holding it.

I found some bands on Wal-Mart's website:

Is that the right kind and could it re-injure the hand again?

Both Elaine and I have used them, in the house we have red, green, blue and yellow but I am buggered if I remember which one is which resistance.

Check with your PT or doctor first.

Ours are much less thick than those you linked to. Between now and New Year I'll take some pics or a vid of ours.

Thanks-
The PT is much easier to talk to so I'll see what she says.

Oh no... As @wizardfromoz said, they should be smaller than that. You should be able to find them with 1 pound's worth of resistance. I have a whole set of 'em here from my PT.

They should clearly state the resistance value, at least on the packaging.

You may need to go to a medical supply place if you can't find them with low enough resistance.

I am not 100% sure where mine are. I may have discarded them.

If they say work with a pound, work with a pound.

Roger that- I think there is a medical supply store not that far up the beltway from me, thanks.

The more I think about it, I don't actually recall purchasing them. I'm missing some chunks of memory from that period in my life 'cause the brain doesn't want to recall pain. I am currently thinking my PT (I had in-home PT and I already had a small in-home gym of sorts) actually just brought them and gave them to me.

I'm sure someone paid for them, but thinking about it makes me pretty sure that someone wasn't me.

I'll be down in the gym tomorrow (I still do some PT but that has transformed to just a light workout every couple of days) and will look around. If I spot 'em (and they're suitable) I'll send you a PM.

There are also hand exercisers that you grip, and those are in varied strengths. There's some that let you isolate which finger you grip with, and we guitarists often use those, and those too are available in varied strengths.

I'm just making you aware of these things. You should consult a qualified medical professional before trying any of this stuff. They'll know more than I will ever know on the subject.

Thanks brother:-

I didn't pick up the resistance bands because I didn't want to make the healing process go backwards.

*****The good news is I can make a fist now and do some writing and typing.*****

I think my hand is out of the woods (theoretically speaking) and on it's way to a full recovery.

As long as I don't do too many reps my hand is much, much better!-:)

Good news!

I'm happy but paying the price for typing too much yesterday:-
Ya live and ya learn.

... and 4 weeks down the track, how are you doing?

Cheers
