I am using a older computer but still serviceable. My current install is an outdated Linux Mint 17.3. I tried to get a boot disk with the live Mint 21 (and 20) to load so that I could install Mint 21 in lieu of Mint 17. Not so fast...I keep getting errors that prevent the live install disk from running. I have tried running down these errors on the net, but most posts don't seem to have the answer.
The errors are:

x86/cpm" VMX (outside TXT) disabled by BIOS
sdd No Caching mode page found
sdd Assuming drive cache: write through
scsi Wrong diagnostic page: asked for 1 and got 8
scsi Failed to get diagnostic page 0x1
scsi Failed to bind enclosure -19

After these messages, the disk just hangs.
Here is my system information:

How to get past the errors and get the live disk to run and install Mint 21?

Your machine may be 12 yrs old [or there about] but there is nothing in its construction that should be causing you problems, so here is my generic answer..

Why won't Linux install
1]corrupt download or bad burn of the ISO to the installation medium [did you check the SHA sum?] [
2] old or poor quality USB stick /a pre-used optical disc [use a good quality new USB pen-drive clean and formatted XFats, use Etcher to make your bootable drive [if you're using an optical drive] make sure the lens is clean and use a good quality DVD-r [not RW] and use a lower burn speed x3 may take longer, but it gives a better result]
3 missing drivers [should not be a problem with Mint]

see my how to install Linux guide [link below] Print off and use it as a checklist as you install

upping the ram to 4GB would also help

oops Forgot to say Welcome to the forums..

Hello @MrBob22,
Welcome to Linux.org Forums.
The only problem I can see is the Nvidia gpu may need to have nomodeset in the boot line.
See Here.
Scroll down to the section of

Solving freezes during the boot sequence

I'm not sure the the GT210 is still supported or now. Between 17.3 and 20 Xorg was changed and some older Nvidia card were dropped from support.
Than may be the bottle neck. But just guessing.
Good luck.

I have a 10 year old Laptop...64bit...4GB of RAM running Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.1 and had no problems with installation.

Here is the install info...https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/

Linux Mint 21 does have bugs...I installed it in Virtualbox and it didn't run very well...so I'll wait for Mint 21.1.

In the mean time...try Mint 20.3 which should install just fine and run without any problems...good luck.

Thanks for all the thoughtful replies. I did burn a new disk for Mint 21, but that did not seem to help. Will try these other possible answers as well. And thanks too for the welcome mat!

@MrBob22 G'day from DownUnder and welcome to linux.org :)

I believe Brian @Brickwizard may have misread a little of your inxi output, where it says

Info: Processes: 174 Uptime: 23 min Memory: 1657.2/7965.0MB

That looks like you have 8GB of RAM - is that so? That is more than sufficient.

I'll take a further look at this over my weekend.

Thanks for the update. I do believe I have 8 gb memory installed. Now I am trying to boot from a usb flash drive, but the BIOS seems not to have a way to do it...sigh.

Your machine is of an age when the change from DVD to USB started, so it may not be USB bootable,
try using a new DVD-r [not +r or DVD-RW] and use a lower burn speed of not more than 3x] it will take a bit longer but usually works better

First go into your BIOS settings and enable the virtualization technology - the first line says " x86/cpm" VMX (outside TXT) disabled by BIOS" (VMX stands for Virtual Machine Extensions) yours is turned off - this virtualization technology is used by the KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) which is built into the Linux kernel. Upon boot, this generates an error in the logs that it cannot be initialized because the hardware capabilities are disabled in BIOS - so it needs to be turned on

Now while in the BIOS check you boot order sequence and see if USB is listed - if it is not listed you will not be able to boot from it. If it is listed you can generally get into the one time boot menu by tapping the F12 at startup and select USB

I tried to update the BIOS file to no avail. There are 9 updates to BIOS. Which to choose? Did not matter because the 2 I tried did not load. For some reason, Mint 17 does not allow you to copy files easily from your computer to the flash drive. When I finally get the files on the flash drive, the M-Flash settings in the BIOS kept saying if could not find a bios file and to copy such a file to the root directory. The flash drive presents itself at 16FB-F24B. On the file operations line, it shows as 31 GB Volume. but why? In any event, another epic fail. I wanted to upgrade but I am stuck.

Generally choose the latest date, which would be the newest BIOS

The USB bus driver generates a standard set of identifiers composed of values retrieved from the USB device and interface descriptors, which yours came up that number which is most likely a manufacturer code - my Dane-Elec USB drives do that as well - you can rename it if you choose.

As far as upgrading goes I usually do not upgrade - when a new version comes out I reformat my drive and do a clean install

Thanks for your reply, Lord Boltar. I should have said I wanted to do a clean new install instead of saying upgrade. I did the check sums and my download is fine. I managed to install Mint 21 onto a brand new 512gb SATA SSD. If I set up the boot page to that hard disk, the system opens with a LM symbol, and then is stays dark with no further action possible. I wondered if I could boot in a compatibility setting in case the BIOS is interfering with the boot up from SATA SSD. But there does not seem to be a way to get that setting. The prevailing wisdom is to do a clean new install. But what if you are stymied from doing that? The old Mint 17 system is still running in the second SSD but gives me errors in package updates since the files are no longer updated. It then punts on the update and says it using old files. So far, the only real issue is that I cannot load the more recent versions of Balena Etcher as Mint 17 does not seem to support the install procedure. Sure am tired of this problem,,,,

Sounds like something may not have loaded properly
switch on, at the grub menu select mint/ubuntu [or whatever] advanced settings, scroll down and select repair, enter and let it run, to see if it can heal itself [oh make sure you are hard-wired to the router first]

Thank you Brickwizard, for keeping up with this issue. I would pick something from the grub menu, but there isn't one on the boot drive. It just launches into Linux Mint 21 and then hangs. I will try something else if I can think of it.

and

The old Mint 17 system is still running in the second SSD

A Menu will appear if you press and hold Shift (usually right-hand, but could be left) during loading Grub, if you boot using BIOS. When your system boots using UEFI, press Esc .

1. Let us know if you can get that, and by which key usage method. If so, let us know if it has a line (submenu) for Advanced Options.

2. Are you still able to run the Rosa (LM 17.3), albeit you can't get security updates with it? If so, run

Code:
sudo update-grub

in Terminal and see what effect if any it has and let us know.

I am thinking in terms of either showing you how to chroot into Vanessa (LM21) via USB Live, or else using the Recovery Option from Advanced Options in a Grub Menu, to reinstall Grub.

See how you go, we can do with knowing whether you are operating under BIOS-MBR or UEFI-GPT before proceeding.

Cheers

Wizard

Well. I did get to the Grub menu and I did boot into Linux Mint 21. If I just select the first option, it starts up and then hangs to a black screen. If I pick the option to go to recovery, the system does boot up, but not 1920x1080 but 1024x768, which is blocky. I can still use Mint 17.3, if I boot to that disk with the sata cable attached. Something new popped up. When booting after picking recovery, I get a message: disk error, press any key to continue. Thanks for all your help..ps The motherboard has some sort of UEFI modes which I dont understand. I think its using a regular bios to boot.

Since I am booting from a different SSD Sata drive and using Mint 21, I thought I might list the system info to try to help...
