Hi Guys,

Having a curious problem with a Levovo T420 everything working well under Linux except for the DVD Drive which is not working with a Dr Who DVD. I have dvdcss, libdvdread and libdvdnav installled and neither vlc or xine will play the dvd. which my Compaq CQ61 could play.

Tried Puppy as well unusual thing is that in thunar you can see the vob files and read those of the DVD but not play them.

is libdvdcss2 installed?
I see you said dvdcss is installed but not sure if you installed it from the above Lib.

Just for clarity, you are using the distro in your signature?

Correct that is my main os Devuan Chimaera based on debian bullseye. Tried Puppy same problem. I have video mp4s on a dvd I burned that play fine so dvd drive isn't faulty.

I don't know enough about that OS to know if there's something like 'ubuntu-restricted-extras' available.

There probably isn't, but I list the files involved here:

Fonts and stuff wouldn't matter for this.

Ok update installed a program which changes your drive region (regionset) Changed to region 4. Found ffmpeg was not installed. Now seem to have playback with good old VLC. Will report back so far though menus and playback seem to work correctly. libavcodec.so.58 also installed with ffmpeg.

Just as an update to this experimenting this various Debian/Ubuntu based distros I have found Antix the easist to get DVD playback working on this Laptop - finding Devuan the worst (Daedalus). So anyway using latest Antix on it. Like the JWM and Icewm implementations on it.

Here same issues with a ThinkPad T420, BIOS 83ET82WW (1.52 ) date: 06/04/2018. Running latest Linux MX 21.3, everything runs fine, but DVD does not, nether internal DVD device, nor external DVD via USB, external runs sometimes, depends on DVD (protection?), but internal drive is very strange, DVD is detected, but cannot play. I hoped to find a solution here.. All codecs are installed, it's strange.

Hello @mxme,
Welcome to Linux.org forum. You would be better off starting your own thread on this topic since this one is 6 years old.
When you do include the following output from you machine. In terminal type
Code:
inxi -Fxxxzr
and post the output in your post using code tags.

try changing the region to "0"
