could not get lmde 5 to install

from what i know is ideapad320 was able to install Debian 11, Rocky linux 8.5 ,linux mint 20.3/20.2/20.1/20 and all the ubunut mixes
that just makes me more suspicious it may be the beta release having faults

It is confusing. It's a fooler.

Nice. That explains that.

So, yeah, it's still in beta. I'd just report it as a bug and move on about my day.

Normally, I'd consider testing this myself in a VM. But, my DSL line is out and may be out for a couple of weeks due to Mother Nature being particularly moody. So, I'm using my cell phone - which is not even remotely 'broadband'. While my ability to tether/bandwidth is unlimited, it's pretty slow - and sporadic.

yay im moving on. My next question is how do i change linux mint 20.3 repositories to debian?

LOL Are you trying to break your system or something? 'Cause, there are easier ways to do so. (I'd expect breakage from doing so.)

Anyhow, if you want to do that, you probably want this page:

This ideapad320 is just a test machine . nothing i use on daily bases

Nice! Have fun! I find breaking stuff is pretty educational. I call it 'learning by breaking'.

What I *think* I know to be correct:

Sorry David, no cigar on this occasion, and thanks Old Tom for the confirmation, and clearing that up. :)

I've been using LMDE since Betsy (LMDE2) and through Cindy (3) and Debbie (4) - ain't ever been other than Cinnamon shipped with it.

Reason Clem (Clement Lefebvre, CEO of Linux Mint) has twp planks to his philosophy on LMDE.

1. Having Repos available through Debian, should Ubuntu ever go south for the winter.

2. Having Cinnamon, Mint's flagship DE as the only option

In that way, they are self-reliant.

Good luck, Leonardo, you'll need it, trying to change those Repos successfully. :)

I don't think I can really be blamed all that much for the confusion. That's squarely in Mint's court for having an "LMDE 5 Xfce community edition" on their site. Why the hell would they do that?!?

There is also "The College of Hard Knocks" LOL

That sounds about right - except almost every time I've heard someone using that to describe themselves... Well... There was generally a reason they had gone to the school of hard knocks.

I had been running Debian-based distros for a few years (siduction, antiX, Crunchbang, etc,) when I tried LMDE (I think it was 3). I found an irritating bug (can't remember what exctly it was) so I joined the Mint Forums and reported it to thet devs there. Tried to get an answer more than once but was blown off. I came to the conclusion that Mint devs must consider LMDE like a stepchild. So I blew Mint off and have not tried it since, IMO, LMDE is not worth the effort -- may as well go with antiX and use the unstable repos -- less trouble!

now that you mention bugs i actually did find some bugs in non free drivers on debian 11 that are related to network and backlight on this laptop. had debian sucefually install one time and it was bloated. dont know what linux distro to try.

@Leonardo_B -- agreed that Debian per se is a real PITA to install. I'd rather install Slackware than go through installing the other, again!

As far as another distro to try -- I am most impressed with Devuan Chimaera and PCLinuxOS. The latter is available in Community Editions, as well. I went with the Openbox version and like it a lot.
