I accidentally logged out while Gparted was resizing a partition and now every time I try the same thing it freezes.

Hmm... I have a question. You logged out. Have you tried rebooting? If you have, I'd try a different tool, like Gnome Disks.

I just tried it with gnome disks and it crashed the entire OS

Not good news.

If g-parted was in the middle of resizing a partition your system's partition may be compromised.

Do you have a live CD/DVD or Live USB of your distro?

IF not try using System Rescue
The drive I am trying to resize is a secondary storage drive, not my system's drive. It is formatted to NTFS, and it seems to work fine. I can open and copy all the files in it, it just doesn't want to resize it.

Ah... This is my understanding - but we do have some Windows users here who may know more. So, let's hope they reply with something more optimistic than this:

Yeah, you'll have issues trying to change a drive formatted with NTFS. You really need Windows-specific tools to manipulate drives formatted with NTFS. Linux has, at best, the ability to read NTFS. Even when Linux writes to NTFS formatted drives, it'll bork up everything from meta data to file permissions.

Yeah the reason I wanted to resize the drive was to convert it to ext4 and copy the files over. Should I switch to Windows and try to resize and format it there?

So the secondayry drive is an external drive. Thanks for the update.

System Rescue is for Windows and Linux however; I'm not good with Windows, sorry.

I assume you dual boot? If so, definitely.
I just tried to resize it with Windows Disk Management. for some reason it said that it can only shrink it by 170 megabytes, even though there is over 240 gigabytes of free space. I did that, now there is 170 mb of unallocated space and it says that it can't shrink it by any amount. Tried GParted again on linux. still freezes. drive works fine otherwise.

How bizarre. I don't know enough about Windows to offer any suggestions. Maybe try asking at a Windows-focused site? We do have some Windows users here, so hopefully they can jump in and offer more suggestions. I'd have no idea why it limited you to 170 MB - unless maybe it was the wrong partition of some type?

The number it's supposed to put there is the amount of free space on the drive. but it only went up the 170 megabytes for some reason. I think there might be something wrong with the drive. Guess I'll try another forum.

Are you able/open to reinstalling ?

Closing it down while gparted was operating may well have caused all sorts of dramas which are an unknown quantity.

Personally I would reinstall it.

Your call.

Or, if you have Timeshift installed and set up, just restore a previous snapshot.
