Excerpt from the news:
After Google and Alexa, Apple’s Siri has also come under fire for allegedly collecting users’ voice data without their permission. The American tech giant is facing a lawsuit that accuses it of secretly listening to private conversations and sharing the same with advertisers.

According to the plaintiffs, Siri actively listens to conversations, for the purpose of targeting ads, even when it isn’t called upon. Normally, Apple’s service should analyze user audio only when summoned using certain phrases such as “Hey, Siri.”

By the way, this isn’t the first time this year that users have accused a voice assistant of snooping. Earlier in July, Amazon’s Alexa faced privacy breach claims brought forward by thousands of users. That same month, Google Assistant also faced similar accusations that tainted its lofty user privacy commitments.

I unfortunately still live with my parents (due to previous jobs not working out), and even though my dad's a moron, he doesn't seem stupid enough to buy one of these smart speakers, thankfully because it's use wouldn't apply to him. I never bought one from the get-go because I don't see any use for it, and because I'm a privacy advocate.

I allegedly said (tenuous legal link to thread ) "philosophical thought for the day -you do know though , that genetics is powerful and quite probably you will one day turn into your "dad" ;when you may hope for some reverence from people, but if you didn't give it, then how would you then expect it"

Was that a response to me?

I'm pretty lenient with my privacy - in some areas. I'd love a smart home assistant that didn't rape my privacy, but such doesn't appear to exist. Though I suppose I could effectively make something of the sort. I'd love a more completed smart home, but most of that requires phoning home. I don't even bother owning a smart television because I'd keep it isolated on its own network and so it offers me nothing of value.

Not meaning to hijack your thread.
Don't worry. I'm glad to keep the conversation going. If you have more useful points, feel free to add them up.

LOL. There is no such thing at least for now. IMO, these companies need to gather your data to improve their products in the future. Just like Chrome, Android, etc.

This ain't surprising. We're sleep walking into an era of surveillance, mate. Look I mean if Amazon gets enough Ring(tm)s in enough doors, they're going to become a surveillance network that can track cars, people, even your cat. Voice assistants and biometrics (example phone or laptop fingerprint locks) happily collect their data, too. Oh, your free public WiFi ain't so free either.

It's part of an ecosystem of sticking their agenda up your you-know-what. Why do you think Android phones don't let you su root or sudo -i off the shelf? Because they don't want to lose control. Google doesn't make Android for the greater good. Altruism has no place in enterprise. Ever notice how every Youtube link you click opens in the Youtube app and that you can't change that (or uninstall Youtube). You gotta copy + paste it into your browser. The DuckDuckGo browser is also one of the few that actually block built-in and installed apps automatically opening links.

Solution: just don't use <etc>. I changed to Linux and became a caveman. I've forgotten so much about Windows, I'm practically a noob. I have a rule: if I didn't need <tech> 20 years ago, I don't need it now. I like having control over my tech and my software.

Read some of Stallman's essays. They sound paranoid, preachy, and dogmatic, but he makes some darn good points.

Here's a bad idea I wonder how many aren't aware of Amazon-Sidewalk and are to lazy to have disabled Amazon-Sidewalk on their devices.

"You'll have 10 before you're opted in." Yeah, that's why I have no Internet of Shit or smart deviced in my home. I don't need a smart fridge/toaster/washer/dryer/whatevs. I'm old school, no Idiot of Things here. Hell, I barely use wireless. All my machines still use cable to the router. I only use WiFi for phones and if I put my laptop on my bed. Even my mouse and keyboard are wired coz BT ones are double the price and you still have to buy batteries. I'm perfectly fine without "features" in my life.
Funniest thing of all is the security cluster fck this is gonna cause Amazon. It will happen, no matter their promises. It always does.
