Since we are jabbering on about Vindows I have a question of any of you that is familiar with their command prompt as I need to diag. the battery on my laptop.
Just need to know the commands to see what is plurry going on with it, as its behaviour is erratic.
Battery is basically a newie as I replaced when I had it repaired late last year. one minute is says it charging then its not.

you could boot up a linuxOS from a usb attached to lappy and from the command line try a few commands.

the only one that comes to mind for now is : sudo upower -d

But there must be others.

I'll give it abash Capt but not quite sure how it will go though.

did you proof the battery when you got it?
Should you mean did I fire it up without the mains plug in, then yes I did. Seemed normal.
Another thing they do not completely discharge in about 4 to 5 months. It is rated at 8800mAh @ 10.8 Vdc. It was put aside while I was coming to terms with the Linux OS amongst other things that did not require the laptop.

the correct way to proof any re-chargeable consumer battery [be it in a power drill, laptop, cordless vac etc] Is to put it in switch on the machine and run it till flat, re-charge fully [whilst switched off, then run it again till completely flat, and re-charge full whilst off, I have a battery in my ZG5 which is now well over 5 yrs old and still holds a 4hr charge

now well over 5 yrs old
As was the battery I replaced.
Not withstanding that. The reason that I am dubious that it the battery is or may be faulty is that in Feb this year after letting it sit 4-5 I tried firing it up but had to wait for quite awhile before it did so I let it sit there and all the indications were that it was charging, I think not. I fiddle about with it for awhile and then put it aside. then the other day I decided to give it another burl and it fired up quickly then it said it was charging so I just let it sit there long enough to get a fair decent charge. Did this a couple times and said OK then put it aside. Allowed a couple of days to pass then tried it again back to the same old thing, nuffin. But this time once it fired up it said it couldn't find the battery. shutdown and removed and reset the battery. next time it fired up said not charging.
Also when it is just plug into a power supply the idiot charging light on the computer which when first plug in goes from white to amber meaning it is supposedly charging but after sitting maybe 20 minutes maybe a little more it starts flashing and from memory says it is not charging( That I have to check out with HP ) That never happened before with the old battery it was either white or amber.
What the firing up the other day may have been from two reasons 1 the battery developed a surface charge somehow or other. (???) 2 That in the intervening period from when I last tried it a software glitch may have righted it self so every thing was OK. But the glitch returned ( a more likely scenario )
As for batteries in general I have a better than average knowledge and experience with them.

could be that one of the cell's has developed an internal short or corroded
That could be the problem!
As I went to HP and downloaded a PDF on the dv6 model though not exactly mine but close enough as I just wanted to make sure my knowledge was correct about the power light and I was correct in one respect in regards to the blinking amber light but they state it is because the battery is critically low or a battery fault but there was no mention of whether it was still charging but I will take it that it is still charging so I'll leave it plugged in till this time tomorrow to see what happens whether it is yea, nay or indifferent.
HP also has a prog that will diagnose your battery but mine is I think one of the discontinued models of the dv6, not that I am particularly disturb on that account. Also I wasn't on their site with the dv6 so I could download and install the prog.
Getting a new battery doesn't perturb me in the least.
Just add to my computer needs list not what I would like or wants lists.

@Kobac
G'day and welcome.
Thank you for the suggestion only I do not run Vindows 10 only run on Vindows 7 as it is just to so that I can run certain features for devices that do not have a Linux interface only vindows interface.

Is this your laptop battery.
Thanks Nelson even though they were the incorrect parts for my lappy the site led me to the correct battery for it. So all is good. :)
