Hi,

So I am trying to setup CentOS 8 and initially was trying to do this with no internet access. I have since learned it is a complete PITA to do this so bit the bullet and have plugged a USB Wifi Adapter in. Only to find it does not get recognised, it does on a windows system.

I first of all tried copying across the drivers from the CD but this didn't do anything.

So I did the lsusb command and it does come up with a Realtek Semiconductor Corp entry. The ID is 0bda:c811 and from looking on the windows machine it is a Realtek RTL8811CU model. No other command seems to show anything though.

I have read lots of guides on installing a driver but they all seem to want me to download something, I have no internet though only that on another Windows PC. So is there somewhere I can get a driver to get this adapter working?

If it is of use the kernel version is = 4.18.0-240.el8.x86_64.

The only other option is to try and get an adapter that just works straight out of the box, so would this do the trick: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0012E2BKA/

There appear to be step-by-step instructions here:

I have several 8811CU dongles, they all work perfectly in the Distributions I have used.... when you install your distribution you are given the option to install non standard/non free [however its worded] Drivers say yes... remember to plug it in before you install the system

I have no internet though

First establish temporary internet connection for your computer.

Have you a wired connection. If so then connect to it and update you new Linux install.

When updates have completed then unplug the wired connection and restart your computer and see if it picks up the wireless adapter.

If it doesn't then reconnect the wired connection and follow the how to guides from the links that have been posted.

I completely missed the no internet thing.

You can also (often) put your phone in tether mode, plug it into the USB, and it Just Works®. You can then use that to go ahead and get your adapter working properly.

Also, a USB to Ethernet adapter is a must-have item. They're cheap. Order like a half dozen of them, 'cause they go missing or you hand them out to friends who need one.
