I've been investigating Linux world recently, currently running Ubuntu 20.04 from a live USB drive (128gb) with full persistence on a Lenovo Thinkpad T400 (Core 2 duo 2.53, 64bit with 4gb RAM). I'm getting on quite well and enjoying exploring something new. Ideally I'd like to move away from Windoze altogether but there's one program to which I really want to retain access so before I wipe Windoze from my hard drive and jump into Linux with both feet I want to get Wine working and check whether the program is compatible and is going to work with Wine.

I've gone through the install process given here but it ends with a complaint about unmet dependencies.

I've copied the terminal output below. Could someone have a look and tell me what's going wrong or at least give me some pointers towards where to look?

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key
File ‘winehq.key’ already there; not retrieving.

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-key add winehq.key
OK
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo add-apt-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ focal main'

requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

I haven't used Ubuntu in a bit, but search for 'software sources' and untick the CD ROM option and then click okay. It'll require your password. Start there and get some of that mess cleaned up. There's no reason to use the CD as a software source beyond the point of installation.

I was able to install wine on my Ubuntu vm using the exact commands from the winehq website you linked. What does your /etc/apt/sources.list look like? My guess it added a cdrom source location in there, try commenting out the line that points to a winehq cdrom location and then try again.
1. sudo apt update
2. sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable

Thanks, I found my way to Software & Updates and unticked the box next to Cdrom with Ubuntu 20.04 'Focal Fosa' in the section headed Installable from CD-ROM/DVD. This seems to have helped clear some of the mess in the terminal output but I'm still unable to install wine - See below.

Encouraging to know I'm at least using the correct instructions :)

The /etc/apt/sources.list, if I'm using the correct command is;

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list
# deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS _Focal Fossa_ - Release amd64 (20200731)]/ focal main restricted
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ focal main restricted
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ focal-security main restricted
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ focal-updates main restricted

deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ groovy main
# deb-src https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ groovy main
deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ focal main
# deb-src https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ focal main

After unticking the Cd-rom checkbox in Software & Updates I tried the install again and got the following;

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt update

It's looking better but still not getting to where I want to be.

Try commenting out the lines with groovy so it looks like this. Since Ubuntu Groovy is Ubuntu 20.10.
Code:
#deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ groovy main
# deb-src https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ groovy main
deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ focal main
# deb-src https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ focal main
The winehq part of my /etc/apt/sources.list looks like this, which is the same if you comment out the line with groovy in it.
Code:
# This system was installed using small removable media
# (e.g. netinst, live or single CD). The matching "deb cdrom"
# entries were disabled at the end of the installation process.
# For information about how to configure apt package sources,
# see the sources.list(5) manual.
deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ focal main
# deb-src https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ focal main
Then try it again:
1. sudo apt update
2. sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable

Try commenting out the lines with groovy so it looks like this.

You can also use the same GUI section that you used before to do this. Just be careful with the PPA names.

to Install WINE 5.0.3 stable from the terminal on Ubuntu based systems

If your system is 64 bit, you first need to enable the 32 bit architecture - run

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

Download the official Wine repository key and add it:

wget -qO - https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key | sudo apt-key add -

You will now need to install libfaudio0 - WINE now requires this for the audio to work correctly

For Ubuntu 20.04 libfaudio0 is available in the repositories you can use Synaptic Package Manager to get it - or - sudo apt install libfaudio0

Now use this command to add repository:

sudo apt-add-repository "deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu $(lsb_release -cs) main"

Now that you have added the correct repository, you can install Wine 5.0 using this command:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable

After it has finished installing we need to configure WINE - run -

winecfg

This will install Wine Grecko and Wine Mono after this is done you are now finished with the
installation. Only one last thing to do you will need to associate the ".exe" file extension to the WINE installer - simply right click the ".exe" file and select Properties, now select the "Open With" drop down tab and select "Wine Windows Program Loader"

I'm quite new to Linux so maybe unfamiliar with some terminology. Are you saying I should remove the lines reading

from the /etc/apt/sources.list in the Software & Updates GUI i found my way to earlier?
I never use the gui for updates and software sources so I would need to check how that works. In that GUI just make sure you remove this line.
Code:
deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ groovy main
And make sure only this line is there.
Code:
deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ focal main

I appreciate very much all the responses up to now. I've had time today to play around a bit more but sadly still having no joy.

And make sure only this line is there.

After navigating to Software & Updates and selecting the other software tab I edited the sources list accordingly

Other-software.jpg

Groovy-main-remove.jpg

Focal-source-remove.jpg

Leaving

Focal-main-remaining.jpg

and upon hitting the close button was then prompted to reload information about available software

Software-o-o-d.jpg

Which I did, only to encounter

Error-long.jpg

It looked like Software & Updates had crashed and frozen. Other stuff which was already open at the time (Firefox, System Monitor, Terminal window) was still working. I left it for a while to see if might sort itself out but eventually restarted and after confirming the sources list was now correct tried the update again and got the following;

Thanks for that. I'd tried a similar process I found here prior to posting on this forum. I tried running through the commands you gave me and got the following;

Also at some point today I noticed there was an update for Ubuntu available so have installed that and tried to run the Wine install again, still to no avail.

One a more positive note I have at least learned how to take screenshots in Ubuntu and post them on the forum, on current evidence a useful skill to attain :D

After the GUI sources manager crashed, what does /etc/apt/sources.list look like now and can you open a terminal and share the output of: dpkg --list | grep wine ? Trying to install libfaudio0 is not going to solve the problem you are having with not being able to install winehq-stable. For some reason your software sources for winehq is not being updated correctly since it has no option to install winehq-stable.

I see the reason that you cannot get libfaudio0 - you do not have Canonical Partners listed in your Software & Updates it is usually under "Other Software" click the ADD button then input the following

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu focal partner

Click Add Source

Also you need to remove Ign:1 cdrom://Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS _Focal Fossa_
that should be under the first tab Ubuntu Software your repository is trying to get stuff from the cd which is not there

now refresh it and try again
