I got the ubunto 14.04 distro.
My hard drive is completely unformated. So I startup using the CD ROM which contains the distro.
But it has only 3 options. 1) boot from hard drive 2) Ubuntu 32 bit. 3) Ubuntu 64 bits.

None of them works. Options 2 &3 goes to grub command line. I have nothing on hard drive therefore can't use 1 . Where is the option to format disk on distro? I don't see it.

Where did you get this CD ROM?

Also, Ubuntu 14.04 is a bit long in the tooth and will not give you much of an idea of a good Linux experience. Ubuntu 18.04 or 20.04 will be much more satisfying and when installed, will be supported and secure.

Amazon.

I was thinking choosing 32 bit option will automatically format my drive and installed the OS. Should be straightforward .

Instead it just goes into command line grub. No idea what it try to do

I'm with jglen490.

Best for you to go with Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver <or> Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa.

Download Ubuntu from here and burn the .iso image to a DVD+R and than you can start your install from that Live DVD.

If this is your first time using a partition manager you may want to tell the Ubuntu installer to take over the whole drive. The partition manager will format the drive for you.

Later, you could resize your Ubuntu partition on your hard drive; if you want to dual boot with another operating system.

Those version you mentioned only comes at 64 bits right? What if I have an older laptop? Do I need 32 bit instead?

Do you have the specs of the Laptop ?
Brand, model, any info at all may help. Its age?

you could always check the manufacturer website for the make and model and look up the system specs and that is a way to tell. Some setting in the BIOS may indicate whether or not it's x64 or x86 as well. If the tower, etc. has a processor sticker on it,......

Hello.
You can use 16.04 at example to. But you must download the 32-bit version here ubuntu 16.04.6.
Normaly they usually format your harddrive at installing. If that is not posible, you can do this by choosing live-ubuntu and then with gnome-disks as an graphical tool.

Why bother? the EOL for 16.04 is April 2021....just 7 months away

First things first
Give us as much info as possible First

Then
we will know if you have 32 bit or 64 bit, and then you can download the appropriate OS

See my post #6 for the info that is required

More importantly, @lilzz (and welcome to linux.org :))

You are using an unsupported Linux, it is vulnerable.

End of life for Ubuntu 14.04 was April 2019

You will not receive security updates, bug fixes, patches, nor support.

Cheers
