I have a fairly general problem when watching movies or tv shows on my laptop (MS Windows for 3 more days): I have about 40% hearing loss, and more volume is not the answer, because the loss is in layering, if you understand me. That is, I can't hear dialog with theme music playing at the same time. I assume the music and the dialog are often on different channels. Is there a Linux app that would give me more configurability? And yes, I am using fairly good earphones.

If the dialog and music are on different channels, then you can use alsa's plugin scheme to drop specific channels. I find it rather arcane, but it can be done. As far as I know, there's no graphical UI for that.

[alsa is the advanced linux sound architecture, the system that lets most linux systems make noise]
