How to speed up Ubuntu on my 7 years old computer?
Disable unwanted and unnecessary services. Switch to a different window manager and/or desktop.
This is a common question which has many, common answers. Google: speed up ubuntu
How much RAM have you got?
Use Lubuntu and add more RAM (if possible).
There is Lubuntu or Xubuntu, you could probably add the desktop environment on your current Ubuntu and then simply change it from the login menu.
There's a new distro I recommend called Sharp OS which is built on the latest Lubuntu but has more advanced features and graphically nicer in my opinion, can also run on older machines very well with even 1gb of RAM
Add more ram, possible get a faster hard drive 7200 rpm. Or just get a cheap ssd, you will see a big different !
Do clean install with xubuntu, or lubuntu.
Optimize your hard drive, even this article is for ssd, but it will help a regular hard drive also http://namhuy.net/1563/how-to-tweak-and-optimize-ssd-for-ubuntu-linux-mint.html
Get a lighter GUI, like xfce, lxde http://namhuy.net/1584/how-to-install-gui-on-ubuntu-and-linux-mint.html
Separate names with a comma.
