Well Ubuntu was not really the most compatibile. But Kubuntu was much better in terms of speed and boot time. In fact it can actually get to the desktop. However, I do have to change a few simple settings on every boot. That's ok seeing as I leave it on most of the day.

I personally prefer KDE to GNOME because of its ability to be modified with greater ease. It's strange that Ubuntu takes you longer to boot than Kubuntu, because KDE takes longer to launch on my systems. Maybe its because GNOME has to launch a greater collection of backend systems? I don't use Ubuntu, though, so I don't consider myself an expert there. (I use Slackware Linux.)

Another alternative you could look at for a desktop is XFCE, which, despite its minimalism, is able to do almost everything its competitors can. XFCE's what I use on my laptop.
