Hello My Name is Ryan and I'm new to linux. I have a windows 8.1 notebook laptop and I'm wondering what Linux has over windows. I would like to run a duel boot with linux and windows 8 (so I can still run games such as World of Warplanes) and not have to worry about a crash in the middle of a match or etc. Also I'd like to learn how to program and I've heard after extensive research over the web that linux shell is great for programming. What I would like to do is have linux as my main OS and only have windows run when I'd like to start up a game. Would anybody be willing to tell me how to first of all duel boot the computer system, and second help me learn how to program? Thank you! -Ryan

    *Here's my System Specs.*
    Manufacturer: TOSHIBA
    Model: Satellite C55-A
    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-3120M CPU @ 2.50GHz 2.50 GHz
Installed memory (RAM): ^.00 (5.88 GB usable)
System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor

    Welcome.

There are a few topics here on the forums that discuss dual booting with Windows 8/8.1. You should look into them. ;)

    PERL can help, as well.
You have entered a different landscape -- tha main difference is Freedom. Look up Richard Stallings, as a suggestion.

I was talking to some students at school who say I'll have to format my hard drive and re install windows 8.1. I don't have a disk for windows 8.1 will that be a problem?

If you already have 8.1 I don't see why you need to format your disk and re-install...

Exactly what I was thinking, also in it shows the boot order. In the apcmag link you posted (I'd post the link but can't yet) I'd like to change the boot order so that linux is first only to use 8.1 for running games that linux would otherwise need WINE for, also where would i find GRUB to set that in the section it otherwise shows.

If you have problems with running in a VM, from what I have gleamed, Vmware Player (free) tends to behave better with a Windows host, Linux guest. Now, if you have Linux host, and Windows guest, Virtual Box is the way to go.
