    a suggestion

First, to check out your hard drive and get a feel for how things tend to work, download a LiveCD of a Linux distro that will allow data recovery -- like Puppy Linux. Connect at a friend's house (or somewhere) for download, then burn the iso at no more than 8X.

Once burnt, change BIOS (presuming it's not a UEFI system) to boot from cdrom and run Puppy as a recovery tool while being introduced to GNU/Linux, simultaneously.

Have a small blank USB stick on hand, and enjoy!

    Just a suggestion.
