I am in the process of setting up a file server using Ubuntu server 12.1 and need to be able to connect to it with my Macbook. I will need to setup SMB correct? Is there anything special needed for the mac side, other than SMB?

Are you wanting a file server that is accessable from the internet, or from your home network?

I am just looking for a home file and back up server. I picked up a box the other day and I am running Fedora with Samba server. I will see how that works out.

Ok. A home network server should be easy enough to set up.
