I'm graduating soon from an Associates program in Cyber Security and I'm starting to work with my college job placement department. I have studied Windows as a required part of my program, but the most interesting things have been done in Backtrack or Kali Linux.

I'm just curious if anyone else here might be new in the IT field and have any advice for a beginner. I do not expect to be Penetration Testing right off the bat. I might not even get close to security where ever I start out.

I hope in this economy I don't wind up an over qualified member of Geek Squad.

I would seek out users groups in your area. That will do two things for you. One it will get you in front of local people that are doing what you want to do. Two it will help further your education with real world advice and exposure.

That is an excellent idea. I'm sort of involved with a group in my college, but if I could meetup with people working in industry somewhere that would help me network.
