Hi, I've got a system with an unknown distro and it is trimmed down to its very bare minimum. It has a total of ~10-12 commands and stuff like rm, grep, etc. is taken out. What I wonder is how I can add more commands to it? Can I simply copy commands from my ubuntu /bin to the device's /bin and expect it to work?

Probably not. If the system is as light as you mention then most of the libraries and dependencies are missing. You would have to add those files also. Essentially building the system up.
