Put a VM Server in the DMZ?

I just want to try some ideas. Basically, I want to experiment with phpBB forum software by running it on a virtual machine. I would like to "expose" it to the internet just to test it. If I like what I see, I might rent some server space.

I'm just wondering if playing with the DMZ in this way is a security risk to my Host computer or my home network.

Exposing anything is always a risk.

In this case what is your definition of a DMZ? People view DMZ as different things.

he probably mean Demilitarized Zone, in his router

I understand to some people that means putting an entire host on the internet. Some that means a small network that only has pin holes opened up for the applications that are necessary.

What I had in mind was to test an Ubuntu Server in VirtualBox. I was going to try installing different services on it like Wordpress, phpBB, or maybe even a BBS.

I figured to give it a trial run on the internet, I could access the Router and add it's IPaddress or MAC address to the DMZ. It would lack a domain, but maybe I could just confirm it's IPaddress on the internet and type that into the address bar to find it.

Using a virtual machine is generally a safe approach.

That should not be a problem. I would just make sure to have iptables setup since most home router DMZs are wide open when you put a machine in them.

Oh yeah... A new webserver shoved on to the Internet is like fresh meat in shark infested waters.
