Hey all! Another noobie boobie here

Hi hi! Just what guys needs, another Linux noob... I know, must be annoying as heck when we start coming here asking questions like "Whats the best Linux distro?" LMAO

Honestly, not sure if these guys have annoyed u yet, but with the onset of mining, Linux prob has been getting more attention than ever before. I dabble with Linux a while back, but without reason. Now, there is a reason, and I wouldnt mind learning more. I hope I dont become that irritating thorn in everyone butt!

I've been curious about mining(assuming this is BitCoin), but I'm still skeptical about it on any OS. Can people really still earn BitCoin at a rate that keeps them ahead of the cost of hardware or electricity?

After many arguments Linux users agreed that all distros are good. And again, choosing a Linux distro depends on what work you want to do and what is your level. If you are beginner, then try with Mint.

Bitcoin is not viable anymore, unless you have an icy server room and like 5-10 ASIC machines or more... difficulty is through the roof. Litecoin is on the border of that right now, but with the proper setup, yes it is profitable. However the real profits are now coming with these tiny coins being introduced on almost a weekly basis, and people pump and dump them and make big profits. I dont have enough time to keep up on that, but I am starting to see. Its basically now a whole new stock market.

I was just kidding about that question... I do know a little about Linux, but right now all I care about is optimizing BAMT which runs on Debian. If I were truly just using Linux for whatever else I would use Mint or Ubuntu.

Aloha and welcome to Linux! Slackware or any other lightweight system would be the best choice for any extensive data processing, including mining.

With Linux, there are a handful of easy choices, and a metric boatload of niche players. My recommendation would be to consider about 5 big players - this enables good support and compatibility - and choose from there.

And you probably will not even get a consensus as to what the 5 to look at are. Probably look at Mint, Ubuntu, Slackware, Fedora, and I'll throw in Suse for fun. If you have the hardware, the weight of the OS should be of small concern, because mining runs in the background, and your interface needs to suit you.
