Yet another vi / emacs thread

It has been some time since I have used Linux and I find myself not remembering vi. I never learned emacs (my "C in the Unix Environment" prof was very much pro-vi biased - I don't know if the emacs chapter of Sobell would have been used even if it was a two semester class and we had time). As of right this second, I'm using kate as an editor. What would you folks do in a similar situation?

It depends what you are doing. I normally avoid using vi or nano unless I have no gui.

With a gui there are plenty of alternatives from things like leafpad, mousepad and gnotepad+

You can use Wordprocessors as long as you save in .txt

If you are using Kate you must be using KDE, The Gnome equivalent is Gedit.

If you are just creating HTML there are programs like BlueGriffon which is WSYWIG and will create a text file for you.

So the answer, for me, may well be to just use kate (yeah, I'm a KDE guy) until kate does not meet my needs for some reason? I'll just keep my Sobell text handy if I need a vi refresher in case my gui goes down for some reason.

My intended uses at this point are administration, coding and writing that does not require word processor formatting.

My favorite GUI editor is Kate. However, I perfer nano...just quicker to use.

Vi for life!

That is the only CLI editor I use, usually if I'm going GUI its an IDE like Code::blocks or Eclipse (I work with Java a lot, I know all the Unix C guys are booing me right now)

If you need a vi refresher, and if you have vim installed, enter "vimtutor" command in your CLI, it is a built in walkthrough of the basics of vi as well as examples to practice with. VERY helpful and gave me the foundation necessary to enjoy vi. I'm a bit vi biased as well, I love it but its biggest criticism has always been the steep learning curve.

I prefer

Geany for programming

Mousepad for just peeking inside a file (hmmm, what is in this config file?)

Gedit for general use/reading of plain-text files.
