Wondering about Linux...

Hi all,
I'm very very new and haven't had a chance to read through all of the posts so if this is a dumb question I apologize.

Ok - I believe that I can use Linux as an OS instead of Windows, is this correct? Do I have to have them both on a laptop or desktop so that it boots correctly and so that I can use Office products? I'm tired of the virus potential from Microsoft products but do need Office for daily documents, etc.

You can have just Linux. You will not easily have Microsoft Office products, but you can use other compatible Office products. E.g. LibreOffice can read and write Microsoft Office formats,
 
You must get acquainted with Linux distribution concepts to get the best of it. You will be very happy about how lightweight, virus-free and naturally defragmented your system can get.

LibreOffice isn't likely an ideal alternative for advanced users demanding special features I can't think of right now, but it is a really nice replacement for MS Office. I switched to it and never looked back.

One does not have to have both Windows and a GNU/Linux distribution on any computer unless MS Office is something one cannot live without. In which case, one can go with either a Live distro such a Puppy Linux (not installed but runs from a CD or a USB stick), an install of a distro to the hard drive along with Windows (called dual-booting), or using a Virtual Machine setup (requires hardware compatibility).

Tell us about your hardware and what you want to do besides run that other Office program, please. This so that you may be better helped by someone here at this forum.

Hallo, I am a 100% N00B here & with Linux. I'm a Mac guy- but have an old Vista PPRweight that I wish to wipe and try my hand at Linux., I've been steered in direction of Ubuntu. Is 13.10 a good version for someone with ZERO linux knowledge?
 
Thank you, I've been a little leey as other have said older versions seemed more user-friendly to learn on...
