I just received my new Acer laptop and it boots to the command prompt.
[root@localhost /] #

I want to install a gui that I can actually use. I generally need help to get started. What and where do I go next? Thank you.

It is best not to run permanently in Root...

Try: startx
and see what happens

Thank you. I typed in startx and pressed enter. "command not found."

Do you know which distro you have? If not, type: uname -a

(Note the space between uname and -a.)

Linux Localhost.Localdomain 3.1.51p #11 SMP (date) GNU/Linux
then back to;
[root@localhost /] #

I've installed Ubuntu, but now I need the drivers for the touch pad in order to use the mouse pad.

It did not work at all. Thank you for the link. It works now! Fn+F7 worked. Thanks everyone for your help!
