Hi all ! I'm new here and to the world of linux. I am interested in learning more about the linux systems and am attempting to put ubuntu on this old laptop to try it out..lol..wish me luck as I am not very computer literate and have never attempted anything like this before.

Welcome! IF you have any problems or questions during the install. Feel free to drop them here and someone can assist you.

I have tried unbuntu and I do like it. Unfortunately I cannot run both linux and vista on this laptop. I would rather keep the linux system but am unsure how to get rid of the windows vista and keep unbuntu. Anyone have any advice?

Okay, so you want to completely replace Vista? I don't blame you, I have Vista on my desktop...

I assume you can't dual boot because the HDD has little free space? So, if Ubuntu is booting with grub, all you have to do to remove Vista is remove its partition. In a partition manager like Gparted, just remove the NTFS file system. Poof, windows is gone. Then run update-grub2 to remove Vista from the grub menu and you are set. With windows gone you can then use that free space created. Manybe expand the current file system or make a storage partition.

Bit of a contradiction?

You can't run both, but you have both? Why can't you run both?

As I have said elsewhere, some laptops have a Restore Partition and no CD. If you wipe out a Restore Partition Windows may be gone forever...

Perhaps the best use of the resulting free space would be to create a new partition there and mount it as /home

You would have to back up your current /home first and then restore it when you're done.

If you wipe out a Restore Partition Windows may be gone forever...
And you make that sound like a bad thing...

yes with both vista and ubuntu i have very little free space left on my hard drive and my computer will actually just shut off..i assume this is from having both os systems on the hard drive and not having enough space left for the computer to run properly. would there be a way to completely wipe out the contents of the hard drive and just install ubuntu?

If you don't have any data on the hard drive that you care about then you could just pop in the Ubuntu install disk. During the install process you will hit a point asking you about where to install it and will then be able to wipe the drive clean and install Ubuntu to the nice clean drive.

This of course is a quick and dirty way that causes you to loose all data on the hard disk. On the plus side though it will allow Ubuntu to install and setup the partitions in a way that works best for Linux.

Having little free space on the hard drive will not cause this. Sounds like some other issue, maybe overheating or power issues.

think i may have found the problem...cleaned the fan and all the dust and dirt out of the inside...lol..computer runs muchs cooler now and even a little faster..amazing what a little cleaning will do

Dust and computers do not mix....;)

Still, you should continue to use Linux...

I plan on it...I will see if I continue to have issues...this is a work in progress..:)..I'm not very computer literate so this is a learning experience.

well so far so good...I am able to run either OS without any problems at the moment...thanks to all for the advice and help....I'm definitely liking ubuntu
