Leaving the orchard, joining the Linux

Hi everyone,

I've liked the idea of switching to Linux for a long time, but it looks much more likely now. Our MacBook's hard drive failed this summer, and we were already feeling squeezed towards updating by the lack of updates for the OS (which was, in turn, limited by the vintage of Core2Duo processor).

Six years seemed quick for it to become obsolete. This is one of the reasons I'm not as in love with Apple as I was some years ago. I wasn't sure Linux would be practical, despite my inclinations, because of the need for various MS Office software for work, but we got the chance to take a friend's Ubuntu system for a test run this summer, with LibreOffice, on a ten-year-old laptop, and everything worked smoothly, so I think we have a green light and I'm excited about making the change.

If possible, I would also like to put our next computer together myself, but that's still in discussion. I know I'll have some specific questions for the forum and hope some more savvy users can give a few answers. I'd be especially happy to hear from people who've done environmentally-responsible computer setups, whether in terms of power conservation, recycling parts, or whatever you've thought of.

Thank you,

Marlon
