I like to go for an Installation of LINUX OS for my LAPTOP with configuration

Intel I5 Processor
6GB RAM
and 500 GB harddisk

I like to work on Programming and also want to learn designing device drivers. So which linux distribution will suit best for me..

Arch or Fedora are both good. My choice is Puppy Linux http://puppylinux.org or Slacko 5.5 Linux. http://slacko.01micko.com/ They are both small and you can added the devx developers extra file that includes the Gcc c compiler and the GDB debugger. Any Linux you choose will let you learn about writing device drivers. here is one article I googled "learn writing device drivers" http://www.networkcomputing.com/unixworld/tutorial/010/010.txt.html
May you be successful in your quest for knowledge. Satheesh2020 Let us know what distro you decided to install. Ok? http://www.distro.com Search Puppy Linux for answers. http://www.wellminded.com/puppy/pupsearch.html I have compiled C open source programs under puppy linux and have been a programmer for several years. Since you are starting out, give Puppy LInux a test drive. You can have more than one Linux installed onto your rather nice computer with a large hard drive.
