There are a lot of cars with a lot of different names but people still manage to buy one!

Choose the kind of Linux YOU like and which suits YOUR computer. You might get lots of advice from people but that's about what THEY like and which suits THEIR computer.

As I have said in another post there are basically 3 types of Linux
1) The kind you built yourself, like Linux from Scratch, Arch, Slackware etc
2) The kind based on Debian Linux with .debs e.g. Debian itself, Ubuntu and Linux Mint etc
3) The kind based on Redahat with .rpms e.g Centos, Fedora, Mageia etc

Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu so they are very similar. Ubuntu doesn't immediately give drivers for MP3s, DVDs etc - but they can be quickly added. Linux Mint installs these drivers straight away.

Look at Distrowatch, the table on the right entitled "Page Hit Ranking". It will give you SOME idea of what is popular.

Try different distros. Look at http://livecdlist.com/operating-system/linux. A LiveCD work totally from the CD-Rom and leaves your Hard Drive totally untouched, as though it have never been installed.

Find out what YOU like and what suits YOUR computer. Listen to any advice but don't take it blindly.

I've used Windows for 15 yrs but I'm making switch to a Linux distro.
So far I'm trying Mint and Ubuntu
When I figure out how to put them into partitions I'll install them
The desktop PC is going to be simple as I already have a new hard drive for it, the laptop slightly more difficult as drive is already partitioned
The really great thing about the different distributions is the fact you can run them off CD/DVD or flash drive to test them

What do you use your computer to accomplish?

Photo editing, Videos, email, Web Browsing, Home Network, Web Server, Games?

What are your computer specifications?

I use them for a bit of everything, mainly e-mail and forums but some simple video editing, various spreadsheets, all home use/home office stuff
Desktop is 3.3Ghz dual core I put together a few years ago, laptop is 1.8Ghz
I've already been using Gimp so know how that works (although I doubt I use 1/10 of it's capabilities)

Just try a couple and decide what you like the best. We can't make the decision for you. Only you can make the decision on which one you like best.
For a beginner try one that is simple and easy to install.
Try Lubuntu, Zorin Os, Go for ones with Lxde or Kde coming from windows. So that it will still have the same feel as windows. Until you get full comfortable with linux to venture on past the DE.

Maybe give Linux Mint Cinnamon a try? I personally never tried it. But it doesn't hurt to start somewhere.
If we can help you along the way or encounter any problems. Just post and someone is bound to help you.

Good luck :)

For Video Editing you might have a look at openSUSE and/or Ubuntu, Ubuntu Studio edition.
