There are a lot of cars with a lot of different names but people still manage to buy one!
Choose the kind of Linux YOU like and which suits YOUR computer. You might get lots of advice from people but that's about what THEY like and which suits THEIR computer.
As I have said in another post there are basically 3 types of Linux
1) The kind you built yourself, like Linux from Scratch, Arch, Slackware etc
2) The kind based on Debian Linux with .debs e.g. Debian itself, Ubuntu and Linux Mint etc
3) The kind based on Redahat with .rpms e.g Centos, Fedora, Mageia etc
Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu so they are very similar. Ubuntu doesn't immediately give drivers for MP3s, DVDs etc - but they can be quickly added. Linux Mint installs these drivers straight away.
Look at Distrowatch, the table on the right entitled "Page Hit Ranking". It will give you SOME idea of what is popular.
Try different distros. Look at
http://livecdlist.com/operating-system/linux. A LiveCD work totally from the CD-Rom and leaves your Hard Drive totally untouched, as though it have never been installed.
Find out what YOU like and what suits YOUR computer. Listen to any advice but don't take it blindly.
