Hi everyone,
Noob here!! I'm just getting into Linux, I've been using Windows since 3.11......
I had a computer that would constantly crash on Windows 7 sometimes within days of first booting up, sometimes within minutes. I finally shelved it until recently when I started looking into Linux. I wondered if it would make a difference, so I went ahead and installed Ubuntu. Great looking OS!! I am a little underwhelmed with the speed though. I thought it would be a lot quicker than it is performing at the moment. Maybe it's just me lol. Anyway, hi again, I will see you all around as I get more into this new experience.

hi there welcome to the corner..i hope you have a great time out here and enjoy your stay up here at this community.

I have noticed that some distros like Ubuntu tend to be slow and don't do a good job at showcasing the speed of Linux. If you consider yourself a proficient computer user try either fedora or Debian, both of which outperform Ubuntu on the desktop by a long way. I would personally recommend Debian, don't let it's supposed 'difficulty' put you off. It's just as easy to install as anything else, and as a new user you will be googling and reading forums for answers to things regardless of which distro you choose. Debian has a huge support community so answers are usually pretty easy to find. Peace, and have a great journey.

What are the basic specs of your computer? How much RAM have you got?

You might be better to install different versions of Ubuntu instead, like Lubuntu (with an LXDE Desktop instead of Gnome) or Xubuntu (with an Xfce Desktop). Lubuntu runs quicker than the others.

You can install these other desktops through and using your present Ubuntu, and then remove the Gnome parts. You can find out how here: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purelubuntu

Thanks, I will look into those options.
I am running a AMD dual core 64bit cpu and 8 gigs of RAM, with a 640GB 7200 RPM HDD.

Welcome to the Linux experience then!
I hope you find the right distro for you and continue to use it.
Linux really is wonderful.

If you need help choosing another distro or anything at all.
I'd be glad and willing to help you.

What Graphics Card?

I find Ubuntu 64-bit quite fast on my Dual Core Intel with nVidia Graphics Card, even runs nicely on my PIII 32-bit.

It's a GeForce 9600GT. I did a fresh install of 13.04 and everything seems to be quicker now. It would take ~8-10 seconds for firefox to open and ~4-5 for software center and system settings.

@mjlies: Ubuntu is a bit buggier than it appears to be.I think pear or Debian wheezy would be a great choice
