Who's got servers at home?

I work at a hosting company, so its easier for me to get my hands on servers that we've retired, but who else has a collection of servers set up in their basement? :)

My pile of Dell r200 servers.. one running untangle, one running as a backup machine, then testing environments using a rack that I made from wood and rack shelves.

I have a couple of older HP tower servers, but they are power hogs. Right now I only have need for one so the other is turned off. I do have a RaspberryPi now that is my access point to the house from outside.

Depends. I don't use a legit server, I have an old PC from the 90's I use (Compaq Presario series). Extremely low end but does my needs good and haven't had any hardware issues yet surprisingly.

I'm using a Raspberry Pi. It's not very powerful at all, but it can serve a few hundred pages a day, which is all I need at the moment. I've been experimenting with setting up a load balancer, so I'll be adding more Pies soon.

I've ordered an Odroid which has a quad core ARM chip running at 1.7GHz. It will be interesting to see how much traffic it can handle.

First thing I thought of when you said the load balancer thing was this: http://cdn-static.zdnet.com/i/r/story/70/00/004209/original/raspberry-pi-supercomputer-1-620x465.jpg

I use my old lenovo laptop that has 120gb HDD and 3gb of ram. That's enough for my house. Along with external 3TB storage.

Sent from my Nexus 4

Buy a cheap/refurbished netbook and you got a pretty nice set up and one that's portable. Never considered this possibility o.o

An old HP Presario. FTP mostly. A little fun stuff with Snort(soon to be changed to suricata) with Arch.

I thought about building one of those, but I wouldn't have a clue about how to use it :). I'll just stick with web servers.
Its just a bunch of raspberry pi's put together with a lego rack, lol.

I run my ex-desktop tower with a quad core CPU, 4gb ram and 4TB storage as a Debian server which serves media to the house, a collection of esoteric texts via FTP to a collection of friends, mumble voice coms for myself and about 8 other gaming friends, and provides remote ssh access to my various Linux boxes and remote VNC to my current desktop.

I've upgraded my Raspberry Pi web server. I'm using an old PC as a load balancer and four Raspberry Pies as worker nodes. I finally got page caching to work properly so it's fairly quick.

So I use a Sun 4100 as my router/home network server running Zentyal (it started out as an experiment, I liked it so I kept it). I have a raspberry pi running as a DMZ, an old 2U SuperMicro running as a file server then 6 other Sun servers from 2100 to 4200 for various testing and experimenting/playing activities. All of them are mounted in a 42u rack that my company's IT department wanted out of one of their wiring closets.

I have one that is a work in progress. I got a hold of an old Windows98 Desktop with 8GB HDD and only 64 MB of Ram.

Right now the only thing I managed to install on it is SliTaz base command line install with a few packages. I'm toying with the idea of trying to make it run one of the old BBS forum systems just for fun like Renegade or Citadel.

I used to run some old HP servers in my garage. I got tired of all the noise and pretty much went to Virtual servers. I use an old desktop running Windoze 7 and have VM Workstation installed. I then have a CentOS server and Fedora server running on that. I thought of checking out the raspberry pi but i didn't think it was going to be powerful enough to do the job that my VMs can do.
If you are limited in space or don't want to spike your electric bill them VMs would be the way to go. Or if you don't need much power then I'm sure that raspberry pi could do the trick.

I have some supped up workstations (5 yr old dual Xeons) put aside for a lab project. I had some old Compaq Proliant servers from 2000 but smallest one used 750w so I left them in the house in the divorce process.

Hi team,

I must say it saddens me to hear such question being posted and reason for that is 10 years back it was norm for anyone to have many servers at home hacking at them here and there and now I am even more amazed to read response that hardly anyone one has them as hobby; it seems money seem to drive us now days and not passion!
I proudly have the following for learning and passion towards technology and some are live hosting live mail and website servers
1 x HP proliant G6 DL380 disk capacity 2TB and 96GB RAM _Hosting VMware 5.1
1 x HP proliant G7 DL120 disk capacity 8TB and 32GB RAM _ Hosting VMware 5.1
1 x HP Proliant G6 DL360 disk capacity 800GB and 48GB RAM _ Hosting VMware 5.1
2 x HP Micro Server N40 and N54 disk capacity 4TB and RAM 16GB Hosting Xenserver 6.2
1 x Dell Power edge 2650 disk capacity 600GB and 16GB RAM
2 x HP Proliant G4 DL 320 disk capacity 148GB and 4GB RAM
1 x Tape Library - Quantum PX502
2 x Linksys SRW2024 switches
2 x HP Procurve 1700 switches
Various firewalls and routers varying from Pix firewall, Symantec VPN and SONIC WALL to Cisco routers from 837 to 877, Cisco Engine content 507
13 x LCDS from 19” to 30” of which 5 of them are used on my main desk I call it “Command Cinux” Cinux = Centre Linux

4 x UPS 1000va
And half Garage full of IT spare parts and accessories, you names it and most likely I have it and various from Brand new to used, have given half of it to charity and will most likely give rest too! That is what I can remember of what I have
I still hope that they are people still playing around with this stuff and that I am just an small player compared to them so that it will inspire many of us!
