Why should i get linux over windows 8

Lately I have being playing around with installing to flash drives on a cheap laptop I bought without a SATA hard drive and it means of course I can have several flash drives with installs on and use them with that machine without having to have installs on hard drive, The machine is a lot lighter without a hardrive. Now of course I could install a hard drive and run windows on that and not even have to touch the hard drive using this method. It is so cool that flash drives come with some decent sizes like 16 and 32 gig etc. They are also cheap.

Not all machines will boot from usb but there is of course PLOP boot manager which fix this

With regards to Windows reliance here in NZ some learning institutions go out of their way to make you use Windows which is very annoying. My wife found that when she was doing her nursing training.

You're out of your mind if you are choosing just linux over windows for college. It is likely that along the way you are going to run into some windows/mac software that is required for a class down the road. Many math classes require specific software. It's likely that you will be expected to use a specific compiler for a computer science major and it is very likely that it is windows/mac software.

If you do decide to go down the road of linux, make it a dual boot system with windows 8. You don't want to be high and dry without the ability to run that software.

Huh.....? WINE..... :)

Thanks to this thread, I am now aware of, and reading, "The Art of Unix Programming". Very interesting so far. I graduated high school in 1992, so it is especially interesting to read about the historical development of Linux.

If I don't click post reply now, there will be several paragraphs of how things used to be done. All I'll say is that you young folks should now and then appreciate being able to download 4.7 Gb and then burn it to one DVD in a matter of a few hours.

I know I do..... :3 I was born the same year the Kernel was RELEASED!..... :D

@PointMan You don't seem to know of those of us who are nice..... We say these things about Windows because they're TRUE..... :\ And, to be honest, it's that CLI that runs modern OS's ANYWAY..... CMD is offered as an option to recover from a crash in Windows..... It's lines of code, not windows, that make the GUIs possible..... :) Also, I'm sorry you had a run-in with some jerks..... But, I got DOXed at a site that loves Windows, so..... As my Sensei once said, "***holes come from ALL walks of life."..... :D

You'll find that learning the Linux command line interface (CLI) will serve you well when learning other OS CLIs, such as Cisco IOS/Windows server, etc.

Gratz on choosing comp sci! Fellow student here too. Good luck :)

Aww, but I wanted to bump it up to #10..... :)

For (dot) NET development, I use MonoDevelop. Java - NetBeans. I haven't done much C++ programming yet since I like my programs platform independent and havent found a need to use platform dependent libraries.

Actually, C++ is as platform independent as you can get (besides C). Unless you're speaking of Visual C++, then yes, that is dependent on the .NET Framework, but true C++ is not. Just like BASIC is platform independent, but Visual BASIC is Microsoft's version of BASIC and is dependent on Windows or the .NET Framework. ;)

BSDs have everything that GNU/Linux has plus they are more secure, have better documentation, adequate community, no systemd disasters, they are more lightweight, follow Unix philosophy being actually Unix, and even less likely to break down.
That's why a lot of people use them on servers. The only thing is hardware support which is not so good unlike in Linux. If ye want to build yer system yerself, try FreeBSD, OpenBSD or NetBSD. If ye want yer system to work out of the box, try GhostBSD or PC-BSD.
