Hi.

Old desktop to be used for fresh install of Linux based OS.
Currently has Win Xp Home SP3 running on an Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz with 496 Mb ram and a 74.5 Gb NTFS hard drive.
No wireless, only LAN, has dvd drive and usb ports.

I am wanting to go all out fresh install jump in with both feet kinda setup.
I have looked at Ubuntu but fear its too heavy for the old box.
I have read a lot about diff distros and just get even more perplexed.

Usage is basic internet and media, photographic processing.

What else to consider for an install for a complete Linux virgin??

You can install Ubuntu derivations e.g. Lubuntu or Xubuntu. You can install minimal Ubuntu and add bits e.g. http://askubuntu.com/questions/6144...-that-comes-with-none-of-the-bundled-software

...although the danger with both is that you install some heavyweight apps, which kind of wipes out the point of a lightweight install...

I don't know if they still do it but there used to be 2 install disks, the Desktop and the Alternative. The former was a LiveCD and used a lot of memory. The latter was just an install and used less memory. Go for the Alternative...

Increase your RAM if you can.

My favorite distro for old/ancient systems is Antix.

Thanks, I will give that a gander, sounds like a plan. I like the idea of a backbone and lightweight apps.
Unfortunately the RAM upgrade is not a reality, so I will have to make do with a slowish system for now.

Both drives on another pc, my HP Dv7i laptop both shat the bed within a year of each other, so now it stands until I can afford new ones and a better Linux OS to run them. Never MS again. Never.

For those reading the thread I found a useful link for old and ancient pc's to run Linux OS's

I t will be coming to you in 3....

and after 90 seconds and 3 more posts I can reveal the link......
