Getting new printer HP2512 to work

Hey, yawl!!

I have bought my second printer not computer like I previously stated on here to only not be able to get it to work either. I tried downloading the driver from the HPLIP website but for some reason when I open my terminal it can't locate it. I also can't access any CD's in my cdrom( cdrm?) drive.

What is my easiest way out or through this? If I can get the current computer to work, that would be super, otherwise it is going back to the store.

I just need a simple printer, preferably one that will print, copy and scan for me. I live up in a small town up in the Missouri Ozarks so we are rather limited here on shopping options but thankfully we have Amazon.com, Tiger direct, etc....

All feedback is appreciated!!

Happy Computing,
Landon

I had a similar problem with an HP printer. Opening a terminal and running 'sudo hp-setup' got me fixed right up! Just follow the prompts and you should be printing in a matter of minutes.

Ok, the other day, I spent several hours trying to figure this out and my brain is scrambled, LOL I did the sudo hp-setup in the terminal and the HP manager device set up dealie appears and even though I try all the options available, it says no device found.
What do I do? I feel that there is a way to get this to work, I just can't find it on my own.

When going through the setup, it usually asks if it is either a USB printer, a networked printer, etc. Is the printer plugged in via USB?

First of all, thank you very much for your time! The printer did not come with a USB. I have tried to set it up both without the USB and with the USB cable I have here on hand. It still says device not found. I have selected each option, it still says no devicve found.

No problem! It may be that your version of HPLIP is outdated (which it definitely is if you are using the one that came with your distribution. . . ) Try downloading the latest version here:

hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install_wizard/index.html

The type of printer you have when selecting will be a Deskjet All-in-one, then select your specific printer, in this case, the HP Deskjet 2512 All-in-one printer. Depending on which distro you are running it should automatically start the installation (for example, in Ubuntu using GDebi).

What is a distro? I apologize that in asking my questions, I was not clear about what I have tried and what I could not figure out how to fix.

Ok, when I download the HPLIP3.13.12 and I enter the command in my terminal, it responds like this:
can't open hplip-3.13.2
What do I do next? I know it is downloaded because I can see it in my files.

If it is Ubuntu, then in the selections on the HP link I sent, make sure you select Ubuntu for Linux Distribution, then for the Version, select 12.04. The download should come in the form of a .deb file after which it is downloaded, go to where the file is saved then double click it. It will fire up GDebi (package installer) and when you click install then will prompt for your password. From there it should just install.

I did all of that, exactly how you say to do. I click on the download button and I get the window telling me that:
You have chosen to open:
hplip-3.13.2.run
It downloads, then when I clicked on it this window appeared:

From a terminal, did you run 'sudo sh hplip-3.13.2.run' to get the installer to update HPLIP?

If you go back and read message #7 in this thread, you'll see what happens after that. And I really appreciate your coming back and working to help me!
