I and several of my friends have older Windows 98 PC's that we want to use for Internet surfing (reading news, weather, etc. - nothing more complicated). Most of these machines have 256 MB RAM. Please recommend the currently most suitable lightweight Linux distribution to either install in these machines or to create live CD or live USB flashdrive (bootable). Many thanks!

The foregoing is a pretty good list.

I'd also like to point out that sysresccd is built with gentoo. I have both bootable CDs and flash drives wtih that.

I'd recommend Lubuntu which is LXDE based, would be no problem to run on the computers you specified.

Other OS based on Lubuntu I recommend even more is MIA Linux, got better selection of apps for my taste, more comfortable.
