I don't really know how to approach this subject, I will start by saying that trying to network 2 kubuntu machines has been possibly the hardest task I've ever attempted to complete in the system world, I do keep in my mind the fact that I don't know how to is whats makes it extremely hard plus the fact that there are very limited documentation available on how to equaled with the fact that those that know how to talk to you & or attempt to teach you as if you should already know how. instead of teaching you the nuts and bolts of this Linux networking thing so that a thorough understanding can exist. with that said can someone please help me understand how to network 2 or more kubuntu machines.

Helps to know exactly what you're trying to do. Have you tried the simpler tools like zeroconf or Samba?

There's an older guide here, but a good amount of details ought to apply to modern releases.

I use samba still i must have something ill configured.

My goal is to be able to use the network neighborhood to view machines & access shares on both Linux and windows machines from my Linux machine with out having to enter smb://XXX.XXX.X.XXX

I also have issues accessing the NTFS shares on my Linux box from my windows machines though I can access the shares on the main drive its kinda funky to me.

I have been told I must edit the network config file to access the shares but i am unsure as to what to edit

Again I echo it depends on what you want to do... if it is a matter of networking as in sharing files then it in principle is the same as Ubuntu.

Strapping up via ethernet will go a long way - but wireless is a little different and it will depend on your Wireless Hub. Servers are very much different and a long subject.

first off you do not need samba to share between linux boxes. All you have to do there is mount the share. You only need samba for windows. And it determinate of which verison of Windows you are running whether you have to hack the registry or not. It's no easy task for a 20 year veteran of linux systems much less a novice. You need to install the samba package for linux and configure them with the smb.conf file. Then you need to create users on the linux boxes with passwords. Should be in the samba documentation. You have to configure Local Security Policy on Windows XP, Windows 2K, Windows 7 and god forbid you want to connect Windows 8. And sometimes you even still have to hack the registry to get it to connect and share. Once you have all that done, then you can create a map drive... Just one thing, even after you create that drive; if you ever reboot you have to re-enter the password to get connected. WINDOWS JUST DON'T PLAY NICE! Period! I will help you if you want to delve into the nether world of samba and windows.
